The Anniston eclipse arrived on schedule and drew wide interest. From before 7:00 until nearly 9:00 the event appeared nearly total, with the sun dim and the shadow clearly visible to the naked eye. Spectators used smoked glass and observed a cool, uncanny atmosphere as the shadow crossed the sun.
The British transport Milwaukee arrived in New Orleans from St Helena with Gen. and Mrs. Cronje and other Boer prisoners. Cronje spoke little English, showed plain tastes, and displayed little naval knowledge but impressed by gun expertise as he and staff observed the Niobe.

London dispatches report that General French has occupied Johannesburg. The news has caused intense excitement and a confirmation is eagerly awaited. Roberts’ main army is expected before the City of Gold Mines tomorrow, with cavalry ahead of the main force.
A large group of Confederate veterans from Camp Pelham led by Maj. J. H. Allen left Anniston today on a special parlor chair car attached to the southbound Alabama Mineral train bound for the Louisville reunion. The car, provided by L&N, features reclining chairs, smokers, wash basins and is praised for comfort. The party includes Maj. J. H. Allen Capt. J. H. Savage Lieut. J. M. Sweets and many others. Mrs. J. M. Sweets accompanies them. The veterans plan to arrive in Louisville for the gathering with additional riders joining in Birmingham tonight via the Southern.
The directors of the Anniston City Land Company re-elected the old officers for another year. S. M. Lehman remains President, William A. Davis continues as Secretary Treasurer and General Manager, and P. J. Goodhart continues as Chairman of the Board of Directors.
Mr. H L Cochran who came to Anniston from Boston to join the Hercules Co has resigned and will move to Columbia South Carolina His post with Hercules was assistant manager and a successor has not yet been named by President Weeden.
The protracted meeting at First Baptist began yesterday with bright prospects and strong attendance. Morning and evening services drew large crowds as the pastor spoke on The Agony of Christ in the Garden, moving many to tears and deep emotion.
Thomaston Ga May 28 residents report perfect weather and a grand success for the total solar eclipse observed this morning. Local observers praised visibility and briefings by officials who organized the event.
Capt. J. H. Mountain develops a promising ore manganese deposit on the BE and W railroad eight miles east of Piedmont on Dr. Hughes land. Ten cuts yield solid ore with 42.01 to 53.61 percent metallic iron. manganese is found in two openings 300 feet apart. ore faces show 36.75 to 43.12 percent iron and ore banks lie near the railroad with ample water for washers nearby.
Reports state the Boxers destroyed a railroad line and station 29 miles from Pekin as they march toward the city. Chinese laborers were attacked with many killed. 500 Christians sheltered in Pekin's cathedral. A relief train reached Pekin while trade with Tien Tsin was halted. The U.S. cruiser Newark and a French warship arrived today.
Dispatches report perfect weather and magnificent results at all observation points for the morning total eclipse. President McKinley viewed the event from Fortress Monroe Virginia and thoroughly enjoyed the spectacle.
Mr. W P Parker and Miss Carrie Higginbotham were married this afternoon at 1 o clock in A F McGhee s office officiating. The ceremony marked a quiet nuptial with immediate family in attendance.
