War dispatches report a mass struggle in the Trentino region as Italian and Austrian forces clash for twelve days with 300000 troops and heavy artillery. French and German actions near the Meuse show renewed assaults and counterattacks with fierce trench fighting and continued bombardment.
Nine thousand American citizens in training with the American Legion will join the great allied offensive on the western front around mid July. Each legionaire will carry a folded American flag in the bosom pocket to be hoisted on bayonets over the trenches.
Washington May 26 William Howard Taft opens the first national convention of the League to Enforce Peace before a distinguished audience. Delegates from politics education finance industry and pacifist groups aim to create an international court and council of conciliation to prevent war and arbitrate disputes. The platform asks nations to submit questions to the court before declaring war but does not yet compel enforcement.
Packed council chamber hears mass meeting over repeal of anti-picketing rule. About 700 citizens signed a petition demanding repeal as labor unions and business leaders clash over the ordinance. Prompted by Judge Leyden and others, the council weighs proposed changes after lengthy speeches.
A midnight fire at Oxford Lake bath houses damaged 89 of 104 rooms and valuables, with total loss about 2500 dollars. Insurance partially covers the damage. Masons and laborers begin repairs, aiming to reopen by early next week. Park officials thank telephone operators and local volunteers for rapid aid.
Broadway awoke to news that Kay Laurell, famed as a top beauty, married Winfield R. Sheehan in London. Sheehan, Fox Film Corporation manager and ex NYPD secretary, was long rumored as Laurell’s close associate. Admirers had long sought to paint her portrait.
A combat south of Grazes between American Army engineers and bandits led by Cervantes resulted in three American injuries with one fatality and two bandits killed. Cervantes died in the engagement. escorts pursued the bandits toward mountain shelters as officials reported to Gen. Pershing.
W Cooper was chosen by the city council last night to fill the post left vacant by the death of D Hunter. He is a well known Anniston resident from a long established family with wide experience in sewer and street work and related municipal engineering duties.
Atlanta May 26. The legal rights for the trial of Victor E. Innes and his wife Ida May Innes are set as opening on Monday. Prosecutors led by Solicitor General Dorsey oppose defense led by Judge Candier and Judge Hines. Indictments total nine, all charging larceny after trust in a case tied to Eloise Dennis and the Nelman sisters believed slain in Texas.
On Sunday the 28th St Michael’s hosts a combined service with Holy Communion at 7 30 am and a second service at 11 o clock with Holy Communion and sermon by Rev L G H Williams Jr of Birmingham. Grace Church offers no services that day to allow parishioners to attend St Michael’s. Mr Weller departs about June 1 for a vacation then takes pastoral work in another field.
Albemarle May 26 C B Burgin a white man Lester Horne John Adams and Fred Wolfe Negroes were convicted of murder in the earlier cantrel case for the killing at Hedin April 25 by a jury on one degree murder.
After a lengthy trial in the circuit court Judge Merrill presided. The jury found for Griffis the defendant and Browning was awarded 15,000,000 in damages? The case centered on alleged spousal estrangement with many witnesses testifying to sightings of Griffis with Browning's wife. The courtroom was crowded as jurors deliberated about the verdict.
Jasper Brandon, a Black chauffeur, was fined 50 dollars plus costs for speeding and 100 dollars plus costs for taking the owner's car without permission after a Saturday night crash on the Alexandria road that injured several Black passengers. Det. Fred Freeman and Officers Blakemore pursued him after he hid in the woods.
Nashville May 24 John R Terhune promoted from district commercial superintendent to division head at Western States Telegraphs Company with headquarters in Nashville. Terhune has led regional operations and now assumes greater responsibility overseeing division activities.
Atlanta May 26 Charles S Hamlin governor of the Federal Reserve Board told Georgia bankers that American prosperity is broad and sound not war driven. He spoke in Macon to the Georgia State Bankers Association and addressed Atlanta bankers during a day in the city noting rapid development of foreign trade opportunities and growing incentives for state banks to join the Federal Reserve System.

The city council unanimously accepted a $20,000 gift from the Carnegie Foundation to erect a free public library. Plans will be examined and a contract let as soon as possible. Officials hold tentative plans and will seek others for the most suitable option.
