In New York longshoremen clashed with strikebreakers as children allegedly sparked the riot. Several men were injured and gunfire was reported before police arrested two armed black suspects. The conflict arose when a child allegedly precipitated the melee.
Special to the Star reports intense fighting between dock workers and police in Santiago. A striker wounded by a valley shot is feared to die, raising threats of vengeance. Police guard the docks as strikers threaten to stone any strikebreakers.
Delegates gather in Macon Missouri for the national convention of the women's foreign missions of the Presbyterian church set to open tomorrow. The four to five day session includes consecration ceremonies for several missionaries bound for foreign fields.
In Helsingfors on May 25, the czar's colorless address at the Finnish Diet's opening drew a firm response. Members affirm they will not bow to St Petersburg, pledging to maintain old privileges and local autonomy while expressing loyalty.
Montgomery May 25 The pardon board spent most of yesterday hearing John Williams request a commutation of his death sentence to life imprisonment for the killing of state Senator Robert L Hipp. A stay of execution had been granted by Judge Weaver in habeas corpus proceedings on grounds of insanity. Both Williams and Hipp’s family were represented and many outsiders attended. The case raised claims of local prejudice affecting a fair trial.
Frank Roberts, former Anniston post office clerk, remains in Los Angeles and will not depart until next Monday. Deputy Marshal Hill expects arrival in Anniston by Friday after a five day trip via New Orleans. Roberts may post a $3,000 bond and be jailed briefly upon arrival.
London May 25 Andrew Carnegie announced a philanthropic plan to pension all aged and poor Scots living in Great Britain. Applicants over 60 and indigent may be returned to Scotland and paid 15 shillings per week. Carnegie unveiled the plan on arrival at Skibo Castle.
The census bureau reports U S consumption of 3 646 493 cords of wood for paper pulp in 1906 up from 3 192 123 cords in 1905. The rise is driven by higher use of news print paper with 250 mills in operation in 1906 versus 247 in 1905.
Receiver T. M. Throxton of the First National Bank of Attalla wins a judgment for 21 749 dollars against former president L M Dyke in United States district court. The same court returns a verdict for W T Hardin of the Southern Railroad for 1 27? dollars.
In Washington on May 25 the German and Austrian postcard makers agreed to raise prices by about seven percent. Consul General Richard Guenther in Frankfurt reports 7700 wholesale firms will push the rise to retail dealers, leading to higher card prices across the United States where many cards are produced abroad.

Paris May 25 The complete concordat between Japan and France has been established and will be signed soon. Foreign Minister M Pichon announced at a council of ministers meeting that the terms of the treaty were read and the signing would take place in the near future.
At the McKinley residence in Canton Ohio Mrs. McKinley was reported very low at noon and sinking rapidly. Doctors remain at her bedside as relatives prepare for the end. her condition has grown worse since morning with a failing heart not responding to stimulants.
A grand ceremony in Capitol Park Atlanta unveiled a bronze statue of General John B. Gordon on his favorite charger. The event featured a large parade with 250 Gordon Institute cadets, veterans, militia and civic groups, and included speeches by Gen Clement A. Evans and Gov Terrell. The monument, designed by Solon Burglum, sits on a 20 ton granite base with two bronze tablets detailing Gordon's roles and a May 12 engagement saving Gen Lee.
May 25 Tuscaloosa The University of Alabama gears up for commencement week with the bac calaureate sermon by Bishop Sessums of Louisiana tomorrow. The senior class exercises occur Monday followed by alumni events Tuesday and Wednesday graduation exercises. President George H. Denny of Washington and Lee University has accepted the commencement address.
Ex postmaster J Mat Ragan now in U S custody at Denver Colo will be moved to Birmingham to await bail and appearance before the U S district court in Anniston next November The transfer depends on paper exchanges and bond proceedings will be handled by Judge Hundley in Birmingham after arrival in that city

Mrs. Sallie Freeney was found guilty of murder in Eastman Georgia and the jury recommended a life imprisonment term after she testified she shot W. P. Harrell to defend her honor.
Alabama City won again in a hotly contested afternoon game by 4 to 3. The locals led early but the visitors surged late, with the ninth inning altering the standings as rain interrupted play.
Forecast calls for showers tonight and Sunday across Anniston and nearby areas. Temperatures remain mild with overcast skies and a chance of additional rain through the weekend. Local motorists should allow extra travel time as wet roads may develop.
In Gadsden on May 25 a jury acquitted Yerlande Degg of murder in the 1904 Womack case after self defense arguments. The verdict, 11 to 1, followed a high profile trial with prominent attorneys, crowded courtroom, and prior 23 year sentence on second degree murder.
A Sunday school workers gathering in Anniston and Oxford wrapped up with enthusiasm. The Sixth Sunday school district meeting featured a house to house canvass for Sunday school work and an inventory of families in the territory. The group endorsed temperance and opposed liquor sales.
Washington May 25 Senator Pettus voices fatigue with the Brownsville case saying he is tired of it and that the Senate can only give opinions which hold little value. He asserts the president’s actions cannot be controlled by the Senate and that any violation must be handled by Congress.
