Special to the Star Washington May 23 Samuel Gompers president of the AFL discusses national drives for higher wages and shorter hours. He opposes strikes in principle but says they may be needed to secure justice as rising costs force wage increases.
The new Knox building on East Tenth street is nearly finished and will be practically complete this week, with painters finishing by mid next week. It is described as handsome and substantial, improving the neighborhood’s appearance. One storeroom will house City Grocery Company and the other will be used by Mr T S Bagley of Oxford for a large furniture stock.

Acting Postmaster C. R. Barker gains permission from First Assistant Postmaster General Hitchcock to invite bids for repainting 75 regular mail boxes several large package boxes and iron posts in the city. Government supplies paint all boxes to be uniform enamel green. Time cards may be added to the boxes soon.
Mr W S Kilby secretary treasurer of Kilby locomotive works will dispose of the Seminole lumber road in Robertsdale Alabama. The 30 mile line with 50 cars and several locomotives will be sold on the ground in pieces over months as the road had no current timber business. The road originally served saw mills and planing mills in the surrounding forests.
Mr Gus Woodruff was injured when his horse slipped on bitulithic paving on Noble street in front of Dr Marsh's store. He suffered bruises and abrasions to the ankle knee hip and elbow and grew faint from the pain before returning home riding his horse. The horse was not seriously hurt and Mr Woodruff rested at home after receiving aid from onlookers and Dr Marsh.
Senator Morgan of Alabama, previously considered alarmingly ill, shows improvement. Physicians expect he may travel to Bailey Springs next week for further recovery after a December grip attack and delayed recuperation due to recent cool weather.
On a boat from Richmond to Norfolk the Newspaper Publishers' association elected Edgar M. Foster president, J. P. Caldwell vice president, and re-elected V. P. Hansen as business manager, with the Anniston Evening Star a member.
Eleven graduates received diplomas and English certificates at Noble Institute commencement. Rev J H Blacklock gave the farewell address, Rev I O Adams delivered the baccalaureate, and Rev J G Glass awarded prizes for senior essay junior English and other subjects.
In Federal court W. P. Hall won a verdict against German-American Fire Insurance Co for 2142.64 on a 4000 claim for concurrent fire policy coverage. The panel reached this compromise amount after lengthy argument and Judge Handley's instructions. The court then proceeded to a case involving W. T. Hardings of the Southern railway.
An entire Huntsville Alabama family Mr J Van Valkenburg wife and two daughters Ella and Lottie were injured in a C A railroad wreck at Lawrence Creek Kentucky yesterday afternoon. The F FP V limited sleeper car was derailed and toppled into a creek, injuring 18 other passengers.

In Lexington on May 23 Judge James Hargis leader of the Hargis clan was acquitted by a jury of conspiracy to murder Town Marshal James Cockrell who was gunned down in Jackson. The jury deliberated for about an hour and a prior trial ended in a hung verdict.
The Montgomery Advertiser secretary-treasurer led a party that stayed a day in Richmond and reached Norfolk on the Old Dominion line as guests of Rich mond newspaper men. They visited James town Island and its historic church ruins before an address on the technical side of the newspaper by Medill McCormick of the Chicago Tribune and a talk by St Elmo Massengale of Atlanta on advertising agency relations to publishers. The group was hosted today by the James town Exposition Company.
The body of JT. F. Roberson, Southern railway section foreman, remains unclaimed at Murphy Rhody furniture store. If relatives in Mississippi do not respond soon, the body will be interred locally.
Washington May 23 The President will probably not reply to Rev William J Long who criticized his game hunting methods. White House officials say Roosevelt has effectively disposed of Long in a magazine article and that Long is pretty small game to shoot at twice.

A Boise deputy sheriff and body guard to Geo Buckley Wells drew a gun in a street dispute with a printer, knocking him unconscious. A second section of passenger train No. 11 on the Southern railroad carried 146 street car motormen and conductors from Washington to serve as strikebreakers in the Birmingham contest. No Aniston men joined. one man offered inducements locally. The train bypassed Union station and ran to Birmingham.
