Saratoga Springs May 17 delegates to the general conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church adopted the unification report by a nearly unanimous vote paving the way for an amalgamation with the Methodist Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Protestant Church. The decision sparked an emotional demonstration with bishops Cranston and Hendrix embracing on the platform.
A special train carried twenty deputized officers from Atlanta Birmingham Opelika and Montgomery to Girard Alabama a town on the Chattahoochee River. Deputized by Attorney General W L Martin the force aims to raid suspected violations of the prohibition law amid intensifying townwide tension and possible declaration of martial law.

Paris report says star of stage Sarah Bernhardt died following a marriage to Jacques Damals in 1882. The Greek member of her company linked to President Poincare era, Demala, was noted in the obituary.

Lloyds dispatch reports the Datr steamer Batavier destroyed near Yarmouth with four lives lost and 1500 ton displacement. Surviving crew members reportedly taken off in lifeboats as rescuers search the scene.
Austrian troops report heavy casualties and prisoner gains as Italian forces seize trenches along the Armentara ridge and Bugane valley. More than 2,500 Italians taken prisoner, seven cannons and eleven machine guns captured, with several officers among the dead or wounded.
