In Philadelphia on May 3, more than 45 million dollars of ongoing building projects halt as 4,400 master bricklayers and 30,000 other tradesmen face enforced idleness after fruitless talks over work divisions.
Mexico City May 3 The latest advices on the hurricane that swept Campeche’s gulf coast raise estimates of damage. The dead are believed to number fully 100 with many injured and feared to die. Property losses run to millions and crops suffered greatly.
Annapolis Md May 3 Tomorrow may be called regatta day at the naval academy as the first crew faces Yale in the annual race the second crew meets Georgetown second crew and the third crew races Georgetown preparatory school. With the Yale duel possibly its last both sides aim for victory.
In Columbia, Rev. E. M. Lightfoot of First Baptist Orangeburg found a coffin at his door with a threat dated June 10 1907. The incident, tied to his firm stand against crime, sparked a mass meeting, resolutions of support, and a city inquiry with a reward offered for the perpetrators.
Special to the Star Canton May 3 Hundreds have been killed and many injured by the explosion of gunpowder magazines. The disaster has caused enormous property damage with extent unknown. Twenty one corpses have been recovered and rescue teams search the ruins for more victims as fifteen buildings are destroyed and hundreds damaged.
The funeral of Charles P. Lane editor of the Evening Tribune was held this morning at the Church of the Nativity in Huntsville. Rev Willoughby Claybrooke of Anniston officiated and pallbearers came from the city’s newspaper and printing community. Mrs Lane widow arrived from Tuskegee where she had visited a sick daughter. The Evening Tribune was suspended until after the service.
In Hinton West Virginia on May 3 three more miners bodies were removed from the Whipple mines. This brings the confirmed death toll to fourteen.
In Decatur on May 3 a jury awarded Mrs. Lizzie Lee, a widow, 200 dollars damages from Dr. W. A. Bareliff after a 24 hour wait. Mrs. Lee had sued for 10,000 dollars alleging an unwanted kiss and hug by the physician from Hartsville area.
In Gadsden on May 3 a bold robbery occurred at the Louisville and Nashville and Alabama Great Southern railways ticket office in the Printup hotel building. The thief took $57 from the safe while crowds waited in the rooms. Agent M L Foster had left to receive a package and failed to lock the safe door but noticed the springlock door to his office was ajar upon return.
Gadsden May 3 C W Ewing returning from Mountainboro reports 10 000 of 12 000 Elberta trees untouched by frost and predicts 12 to 15 carloads of peaches. Elliott orchards suffer few losses and will yield around 60 cars. Several Tennessee Georgia lines near Chattanooga Southern also expect fair crops.
A fire at the Arlington hotel on Marietta and Cone streets began about 1 AM in an unoccupied room. Walter Campbell, a collector for Martin and Hoyt, was overwhelmed by smoke and rushed to Grady hospital with doubtful recovery. He was the only guest hurt as several rooms burned and losses were heavy. Mrs. Minnie Graham, who runs the house, suspects arson and notes there is no insurance.
The missing 3 year old of Alex Hoenig was found in a whisky barrel behind a store near his parents home. Police believe the child was murdered and the mother had been visiting a fortune teller when the body was discovered. The chief of police states the death is murder.
The Union Foundry Company's plant formerly Hercules pipe works, bought from H Weed en by George Schumacher for Northern capitalists, will start blast Monday if no hitch. Schumacher has pushed the plan for over a month. new machinery installed, old equipment overhauled, buildings renovated. About 250 men are employed, with additional office staff added.
Lincoln May 3 William J Bryan condemns W R Hearst for organizing a new party in the Commoner He says Hearst means well but there will be differences of opinion on the wisdom of his actions The statement portrays Bryan predicting the venture will fail.
A warrant charges two young white men named Dorie Freeman and Jim Blanchard with robbery from a ped dler near Winterboro nine miles from Talladega. The victims claim the pair held him up with a pistol and stole two pocket handkerchiefs a dime a quarter and two nickels. The defendants say they returned the items and borrowed the money. Bond set at 200 dollars. offense not bailable under Alabama law.
The bureau of statistics reports that imported manufacturing materials value will surpass last year's by over 100.9 million dollars in the current fiscal year. The surge underscores strong demand for supplies and impacts trade balances.
A Talladega justice of the peace used a test with a tied hen in a dark room to identify the thief among six suspects. Each entered singly to touch the bird, and only one suspect left without blue staining on his fingers, proving his guilt.
Edward Gibson, a negro, was sentenced in Woodbury court to 12 years hard labor and a $3000 fine for attacking Dorothy Varis, a Wenonah schoolgirl. The victim remains bedridden from injuries.
City Clerk's summary shows 315 cases in recorder's court for April with 173 white men and 10 white women, 105 negro men and 27 negro women. Of these 55 dismissed, 1 man escaped, 1 appealed, 6 cases continued. Fines totaled 2170.40 with 1521.20 due as balance from March. Remitted 21.60, suspended 33.90, 219.90 involved in appeals, 537.50 due from convicts at work.
Baroness Annisia Louise deMassey, noted pattern designer, was found guilty of manslaughter in the first degree for the death of Gustav Simon a shirtwaist manufacturer. The jury returned the verdict near midnight and she awaits sentence at the Tombs until May 9.
In Birmingham on May 3 the government announced that Dr. White, superintendent of the Elizabeth hospital for the insane in Washington, would examine Alex R. Chisolm for sanity. The request was granted and the examination set to proceed immediately. Dr. White aided in the Thaw case in New York.
Representatives of glass bottle manufacturers and the glass blowers association met in Pittsburg to set a start date for the annual summer shutdown. Attendees came from New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio and Indiana factories to decide on the suspension timing.
In Paris on May 3 despondency is given as the cause of death by his own hand for Charles J. Steadman of New York and Philadelphia son of the late Rear Admiral Steadman. He reportedly drank heavily and, left alone briefly, shot himself in the mouth. his body will be moved.

Tomorrow night marks only a closing night for special attractions, with continued skating music and pleasure at the Princess for months to come. Debate at 8 pm in Noble street reading room with post debate music and refreshments.
Henry Surrett, a white man, found guilty by a city court jury of obtaining money under false pretense about 400 dollars. He has been jailed since last November. J W Bowling of Talladega county faces trial for executing a mortgage on property he did not own after buying a horse from Donahoe Co and mortgaging it to cover a debt for a mule he did not own. Trial expected to wrap up today.
The Log Cabins Club in Macon Georgia hosted the opening of a large outdoor horse show this afternoon. The event drew society attendees and was declared highly successful. The exhibition runs through tomorrow with additional showcases planned.
