An organized Kentucky Republican group plans to defend Secre tary of State Powers Culton Capt Davis and Hazellipp against charges. Ex Governor Bradley is named as lead counsel and the group pledges to use force if needed to protect the accused, coordinating with a state wide central body. Taylor will not surrender the militia or the office.
A Hopkinton, Massachusetts fire destroyed five blocks of the downtown business district after starting at 2:30 this morning. No injuries are reported and investigation into the cause is underway. Local fire crews contained the blaze to the four corners of the town center. The incident caused significant property damage and disrupted commerce.
Dave Cowden thanks supporters from his March 7 primary victory and declares readiness to back the ticket in August. A brief note invites coal orders from R. O. Watson and Anniston Ice Co with phone contact.

In Nashville, Robert Portane and John Taylor, both Black men, were hanged this morning for murder. The county officials ordered a public execution, and an estimated ten thousand people attended the double event.

Sol Thomson and John Fleming, both described as negroes, fought in Leteber's quarter that night. Thomson struck Fleming with a long knife, injuring his neck, arm, and leg. Fleming is seriously hurt but expected to survive. The injured man vanished after the clash and police seek the assailant.

W. W. Weir, a pioneer resident who came to the city in 1888, died at his home at 20th and Gurnee after a week with pneumonia. He built a mercantile business on West Fifteenth Street and is survived by five children. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow at the residence. burial at Kalgemont Cemetery.
Mayor Prof Tom McKleroy chaired a brief police court session this morning. A white man arrested days ago for drunk and disorderly conduct was fined 7.10 after repeated continuances. Heary Lewis, a Black man, faced a charge of stealing a twelve inch gun pipe. two witnesses testified but evidence was insufficient for conviction.
Ten Republican senators back free trade for Porto Rico while the Republican majority sits at seven. Three Democratic senators support tariff, risking a tied vote and expected defeat of the bill.
Oxford Alabama reports a large assembly at the Baptist church for a union service praising the no license election victory. Revs Johnson Wright and Ward spoke. choir sang. A second union meeting is set for tonight at the Methodist church inviting remarks from anyone wishing to speak.
The body of Mrs Richard Bates 62 died at her daughter Mrs John Turner’s home in Mobile was brought to the city for interment at Hillside cemetery at 3 30 pm. Services were conducted at St Michael and All Angels Church by Rev J H Blacklock after visiting her husband’s grave and noting she leaves six children including John Bates Vegera John Turner Mobile and four sons in England.
