Royal Oak Lodge No. 106 I O O F met at their hall in the Smith building last night. Fifteen degrees were conferred, the best lodge record in the state. two candidates for the initiatory degree, four for the first, four for the second and five for the third. The lodge is numerically and financially strong with members actively seeking growth.
Telegram announces the death of George McGhee at Tyler Texas. Gen. A F McGhee will travel to Texas tonight to attend the funeral. Friends in the city and county offer sincere sympathy to the grieving brother.
Polls open 9am to 5pm for county officers in Calhoun today with many candidates touring wards. In Anniston, turnout is light. ward tallies at 2:30 show 255 in Ward 1, 100 in Ward 2, 0 in Ward 3, and 112 in Ward 4 with reporters noting no solid results from country beats.
A massive morning blaze in Union Associated Press, Philadelphia destroys the dry goods building of Sherman Bros and adjacent Marks Bros store. Myerhoff Bros and Whetmeal Equipment Co also burn out. several smaller buildings damaged. About fifteen hundred workers lose jobs. estimated losses reach 750000.
In a morning session the mayor dismissed Ben Weir for obstructing streets after a warning. An elderly man claiming Rip Van Winkle echoes recounted mixing quinine with whiskey to cure a cold, and was discharged. Joe Leemin faced two charges, explained travel delays, and left after a lenient warning. A $2.50 fine was imposed for drunk and asleep in public.
Wheeling March 7 The Red Ash Mine fire continued through the night with improved progress reports. Twenty seven bodies have been recovered while forty to fifty workers remain entombed as flames burn deep into the interior. Sixty percent of the dead are white men and eighty percent were married.
About one thousand sugar trust employees in Jersey City were told to find other jobs this morning after managers declined to recommence operations. An advertisement seeks to sell a national cash register and offers contact with R. Bi. Garner.
Manager W T Warlick of the Southern Bell Telephone company reports agreements with Morris Manufacturing company of Morrisville to establish a telephone connection between this city and Morrisville. The Morris Manufacturing company will build the line and Southern Bell will equip it, linking with the Anniston exchange for intercity calls. The line will not be toll and Morrisville will become part of the local exchange. poles are on hand and construction will proceed without delay.
Camp Pelham met at city hall on Saturday to elect four delegates and four alternates to the U C W reunion in Louisville Kentucky from May 30 to June 3. Elected delegates were A Sterne Wm Bell J H Savage and I W Foster. Alternates are A J Connor A A Beal J W Ferguson and J F Embry. A committee was appointed to seek means to cover expenses and obtain railroad rates. Capt James H Savage proposed a complete roster of Confederate Veterans and widows in Olm county. The camp adjourned to meet next Saturday at city hall.
Mr. John D. Barlow has sold his stock of groceries on Tenth street to G. K. Dickert & Co. The deal was consummated today. Dickert & Co, already operating on West Eleventh street, will continue to run the Tenth street store as before.
Fletcher Ostrock, a white man from Cleburne County, died before Commissioner Randolph on a charge of retailing whiskey without a license. Evidence was deemed conclusive. Ostrock was bound over to await grand jury action and jailed on a $100 bond. A letter to Commissioner Mur dolph from Hina, Cleburne County, alleged the writer bought whiskey from Ostrock but did not appear.
Brussels March 7 Kruger and Steyn have formed a new alliance between the Transvaal and the Orange Free State pledging to fight to the death. A telegram from Kruger reports the conference and notes a confident hope that continued resistance will prompt powers to intervene to save the republics.
