Special to the Star reports Tuscumbia and Sheffield brace for a dispensary experiment with July 1 law start. Saloon closures will shift activity to neighboring towns as Lagomarsina’s in Sheffield becomes a cafe and ice cream palace. Public sentiment splits between support and fear of crime.
Acting Grand Commander I G Wright and W H Sims organized the Anniston Commandery Knights Templar. Officers named Eminent Commander H G Ernest Generalissimo C A Wilkerson Captain General J F Spearman Prelate J W Conner Treasurer W H Weatherly Secretary J F Landt. Sims acted as Grand Marshal. officers installed and banquet held at the New Wilmers.
President Finley of the Southern Railway will deliver an address at the seventeenth annual Tennessee Bankers Association convention at Lookout Inn Chattanooga. He will discuss the relationship between railways and other business enterprises. Senator Frazier welcomed attendees and W. H. Gass of Knoxville replied.
Special to the Star from Omaha Nebraska June 18 Secretary Taft and party arrived here from Dakota. Taft was given a handsome Indian tomahawk at Rapid City as a souvenir of his visit to the hill. He has entirely recovered from his recent attack of indigestion.
President Roosevelt, via Secretary Root, informs the Chinese minister that with Congress approval the United States will relinquish the difference between costs and claims from the Boxer revolt of 1900. The amount forgiven is 27 million dollars, setting a precedent for similar acts by other nations and signaling U S friendship with China.
In London on June 15 Mark Twain and Bernard Shaw greeted arriving U S tourists. Twain travels to Oxford for an honorary degree while Shaw meets Prof Archibald Henderson who will write his biography. Shaw praises America with Poe and Twain as great literary assets.
Captain Walter White former Alabama state auditor and longtime North Alabama lawyer died suddenly in Sheffield on Saturday He was buried in Sheffield with military honors and attended by Confederate veterans from several camps and hundreds of residents from the region
John R. Anderson of the Dixie Vaudeville company, a fair haired young singer, was fined ten dollars in police court for stealing a scarf pin from C. Sorrell the Anniston third baseman. He had also taken a shirt from the hotel wardrobe and was found with the pin on his person.
Land Title Guaranty Co offers examination of real estate titles and furnishes a guaranty bond for titles approved by their attorneys in Anniston.

Heflin plans a large July Fourth event featuring the corner stone laying for the new county court house. Hon H B Mallory of Selma will preside as master of ceremonies. Masons from Heflin and other cities participate. A Confederate veterans reunion led by Captain W P Howell will follow, with a major barbecue and plentiful provisions.
Norfolk June 18 The annual convention of the International Association of Chiefs of Police opens with heads of police from major cities and national bureau officials present. Discussion centers on requiring prison keepers to notify the association when prisoners are discharged to aid tracking by police departments. Chief Richard Sylvester of Washington presides.
The American delegation leader Joseph H Choate declined a commission post. Italy demands Perez Trania of Colombia be excluded as an alleged Naples anarchist, with protests to be referred to the Dutch government. A preliminary meeting is due tomorrow to map the commission agenda.
Washington June 18 The navy department reports the body of Walter Carl Ulrich of the Wisconsin has been found at Hampton Roads. Five other midshipmen and a fireman have been confirmed dead, with six officers and sailors still missing after the June 10 launch disaster.
Idaho Governor Pettibone issued a statement from his cell denying Denver reports that he worked for the Pinkertons. At today’s court session Harry Orchard testified as defense attorneys plan to impeach parts of his testimony with additional witnesses.

Huntsville June 18 Judge Richard W Walker said he was surprised by a Montgomery report that Comet forces will back him for the United States Senate He declined further comment saying the matter is news to him.
In Montgomery reports say Governor Comer and Democratic leaders may back Huntsville jurist Richard W. Walker for the vacant U S Senate seat. Walker, a former supreme court justice, is allied with Comer circles and has aided the state in railroad litigation, but his own stance on the primary endorsement remains unclear.
Senator John H. Bankhead expresses strong optimism about being elected U.S. senator by the Alabama legislature. In letters to supporters he cites primary support, vows the legislature must honor the people’s will, and notes letters from a majority of lawmakers pledging backing.
