London reports describe a massive engagement in the North Sea on Wednesday with between 8,600 and 10,000 lives lost and about 160 warships involved. British losses include fourteen ships totalling 125,000 tons and the death of two rear admirals. German figures vary, with 3,000 to 5,000 lives lost and 23,000 tons in ships sunk.
Washington reports the German British naval engagement proves dreadnoughts outrank cruisers and boosts the case for building more dreadnoughts and purchasing dirigibles.
