Arrangements are rushing to completion for the Alabama National Guard encampment at Oxford Lake Park starting July 17. Colonel McKleroy announces athletics will highlight the event with prizes for drill, shooting, tent pitching, and overall company and individual performances.
New York June 4 Seven yachts designed for along shore sailing will start tomorrow at 10 a m from Sea Gate on the fourth ocean race to Bermuda The entrants Amarita Iroquois Crusader Margaret Marchioness Restless and Tamerlane range from 38 to 99 feet The course covers about 660 sea miles and compares to last year’s 695 miles The event tests navigation seamanship and grit dating back to 1906 with Lipton trophy awarded in past races.
Boston June 4 Leo McCullough former president of the common council received an indeterminate jail term and J T Cassidy was sentenced to one year for conspiracy to defraud the city government through false entries in an indictment.
New York June 4 Will McAlpin, tobacco king, suffered a serious accident when he missed his footing and fell to the street while attempting to board a car uptown. Doctors fear skull fracture and internal injuries.
Anniston plans to host the Alabama Pharmaceutical Association next year while druggists here pursue the state meeting in Gadsden June 9 and 10. A strong local delegation from every drug store will attend and push for Anniston to host a future convention.
In Washington on June 4 a dramatic Senate moment occurred as Senator LaFollette resumed his remarks with tears running down his cheeks. He apologized to Senator Gallinger for heated remarks and attacked Senator Penrose for suggesting he was feigning illness and staying away from the chamber.
S. A. Russell came back from Denver after three weeks as a delegate to the Presbyterian General Assembly. He toured western sights including Pike's Peak where snow lay fifteen feet deep. He displays Mexican seed bought there, which moves in light but rests in darkness, in a small dish in his studio window for public viewing.
In Tuscaloosa on June 4 John Snyder night superintendent of construction at lock No 15 drowned while trying to weight down a railroad track in a cofferdam as the river rose. Engineer R O Finley and a fireman Rasberry Jones were aboard the locomotive. Finley escaped by jumping and Jones swam out.
George Dunglison elected superintendent of the Talladega orphans home, succeeding H. L. McKee. He has served as Birmingham and Atlantic railroad superintendent and is active in the Presbyterian church. Mrs. Dunglison named matron. duties begin July 1. The home holds 73 inmates with room for 15 to 18 more.
Philadelphia officials and street car workers met at 11 a m to discuss terms of a temporary settlement. Rioting has ceased and the strike leaders expect ratification, marking a clear victory for the strikers though pay rate questions remain.
In San Francisco harbor a boat with 15 United States Navy apprentices broke formation and fled. Marines comb the harbor as the deserters are pursued, making one of the boldest navy desertions on record.
Preparations complete for the first National balloon race to start at 4 p m from the Indiana motor parkway. The event marks the Aero Club of America's annual championship with 6 to 8 balloons, 80 000 cubic feet gas capacity, and entries from New York Cleveland Indiana St Louis and Chicago.
Harold McAllister an 18 year old white youth was arrested in Birmingham for the murder of Conductor Grimes on an Ensley streetcar Motorman Dorough identified McAllister as the man who tried to shoot him inside the car.
The American gunboat Paducah left Bluefields to safeguard U S life and property as the Honduran revolution spreads with Tegucigalpa cut off from outside communication.
Andy Carnegie wired the museum director to create a replica diplodocus and ship it to Emmanuel king of Italy after a cordial reception. The replica will be sent as a gesture of goodwill.
Senator Aldrich says he struggles to keep progressives in line for the Payne Aldrich tariff bill and plans a careful pace to win a full Republican vote. He notes some senators may resist but expects eventual party unity after speeches.

Henry DeBardeleben purchases 800 acres of ore land from T. L. Fassick for about 50000 dollars, extending his holdings to 2000 acres in the district with options on several hundred more.
Deputy Sheriff Phil Lips and Constable Denvir Creen with Street Overseer W F Parker raided a Furnaces gang running a crap game. Master Elston fought Lips on a porch and both tumbled. Lips suffered a left hand burn from powder and a gunshot graze, while Elston was wounded in the leg. Three suspects, Elston Tom Walker and Will Lee, were jailed and await trial.
Rev. W. Allan, chairman of the Forney monument fund committee, reports $95 in subscriptions and aims to finish the list before departing Monday for Memphis. He plans to secure signatures from U. S. C. V. delegates to memorialize General Forney in Vicksburg National Park, an honor for Alabama and Jacksonville. Rev. Dr. Allan, on General Apperson's staff, travels as a delegate from Major Francis camp.
Taft and Booker Washington held a conference yesterday afternoon focusing on the federal government's relation to the Southern Negro. The President outlined policies and urged development of the race through improved agriculture and schooling as the best path forward.
