Dr. H C Howard of Tuscaloosa is selected for the chair of systematic theology at Candler University in Atlanta. He will leave Tuscaloosa in September and remain reachable through the Talladega district until the North Alabama conference meets in the fall. He previously pastored First Methodist Church and served as presiding elder of the Talladega district. He may retain duties as secretary for a Southern Methodist Church board in Nashville while joining the faculty.
Huntsville observers report notices from the county tax assessor showing tax solvent credits for 1909 through 1914 now due. The new tax, upheld by the supreme court, leaves many liable and uncertain about payment obligations.
A two or three day old infant was found on Eighteenth street and Ninth avenue in Birmingham. The body showed a ligature around the neck indicating homicide. The coroner is conducting an investigation into the death.
Montgomery July 29 Reports by Dr. William H. Oates state prison inspector found Limestone county jail at Athens far below standard with indifference in upkeep. Cullman county jail condemned in 1913 but no action yet for a new prison. Morgan county jail in fair condition and Lawrence county jail in good shape. County commissioners reportedly consider new jail for Cullman.
Madame Henriette Caillaux hosted a reception at her home today for friends who congratulated her on her acquittal of the murder of Editor Gaston Calmette. The verdict came after fifty minutes of deliberation, triggering tumult as spectators applauded and barristers clashed.

Vienna reports the world peace congress planned for September is canceled. Official notices will inform all nations who intended to send delegates. Austria signals a belief it may be at war by that time.
In St Petersburg on July 29 Russian officials predicted war as the crown council advised preparation. Prince Trubetzkoi, head of the foreign office near eastern division, warned the situation had reached a dangerous point and all council members urged readiness.
Berlin reports the German government delivered an ultimatum to the Russian envoy in St Petersburg. It states Germany will mobilize its army immediately if Russia begins a general mobilization. The move aims to quell the war spirit sweeping over Russia.
