Washington July 26 leaders from all sides of prohibition agreed to a August 1 senate vote on a nation wide dry amendment. If the measure passes states can stay wet or go dry depending on five six year ratifications and state quotas for the draft.
Rumors of a riot spread citywide before noon as Sheriff Borders called up deputies and Calhoun Guards to a machine gun camp. No riot occurred but 503 carpenters and mechanics from New Orleans endured travel and hunger after camp cooks misinformed the expected crowd.
Report indicates some cities lack official draft lists while the local board lags behind schedule late this afternoon. Sheriff 10 continued on pace five.
Montgomery July 26 Special Will Boyd accused of complicity in the murder of M. M. Davis and wife aged 99 and 92 in Oklahoma county Florida was returned to Florida to stand trial for murder after being captured at Notasulga Alabama. Two white men have been convicted and sentenced to death for the crime and Boyd is charged as the third accomplice. Boyd was brought to Montgomery by a deputy with a governor’s requisition signed by Governor Catts of Florida. The three allegedly killed the old couple and robbed them. The convicted men appealed to the Florida supreme court after sentencing.
Governor Henderson awaited official word on the Tuesday night lynching of Will Powell and Sam Powell in Lowndes County. The case may be referred to a pending grand jury session in late August for possible action once facts are gathered.
The second battalion of the Sec ond Infantry will guard Camp Mc Clean in An niston. Maj. W. M. Weston of Tallassee will command. Gen. Steiner announced a battalion to guard Camp W. T. Sheridan will be the regular police battalion already serving since mobilization. The arrival eases Sheriff Borders by removing the need for stationed guards.
J C Sproull of the Bankhead Highway Association will entertain a scouting party visiting Atlanta and cities along the Cedartown Piedmont route on August 14 and 15. The group will stop at Dallas Rockmart Piedmont Jacksonville Cedartown Anniston and Tallapoosa before returning to Carrollton for a banquet at the Clifton Hotel. Senator Bankhead is expected to join the party.
Montgomery July 26 Special. Swift and Company has purchased all holdings of all stockholders in the Andalusia packing plant and will take it over immediately. Brannon said the company paid a forty percent premium to stockholders with only one objecting. The plant, built last year as an independent concern, has boosted livestock markets across Alabama and into Mississippi Georgia and Florida.
In response to a growing customer base and an expected rise in civilian population, the Polar Ice & Coal Tollway plans immediate expansion. Manager Will Mallory said the firm has purchased land and will build a modern facility to house a fifty ton ice plant, increasing daily output to about one hundred tons.
Governor Henderson ordered in a Wednesday action that three prisoners be released on parole and another moved to the insane hospital. Paroled were George Hermes of Montgomery serving twenty months for burglary and grand larceny OG Gray of Autauga for forgery Felix Smith of Tallapoosa convicted of second degree murder. Frank Thomas of Jefferson county became insane after prison and was confined at Mount Vernon then returned to prison on recovery.
Washington July 26 announces a complete reorganization of the council of national defense committees by President Wilson in the near future. The changes aim to overhaul divisions controlling war operations though labor groups seek representation on all panels. Legislation to curb unreasonable prices is also proposed as part of public safeguards.
Judge Leon McCord of the Montgomery circuit travels to Clay County to hold the circuit court for Judge Hugh D. Merrill who is busy in another county. Chief Justice Anderson transferred him. Ernest H. Hill is ordered to relieve T. M. Patterson in Dale County due to illness in the Patterson family.
A large quantity of plaster from the governor’s private office overhead fell about six am Wednesday. Authorities say bad material in the new wing caused the collapse and repairs have been ongoing for three years. Governor Henderson’s office reportedly escaped injury as debris scattered.
London reports another raid by British forces last night confined to the Armentieres sector along the French border and the Belgian frontier.
Lt. Col. A. C. Dalton from Maj. Gen. Leonard Wood’s staff arrived in Anniston to review camp plans and consult with Maj. C. L. Dulin and Chamber of Commerce officials. He reports rapid progress despite hauling material two and a half miles as new workers join crews and frame buildings rise for the troops.
