The Eight Sided House of John O Groat
In the reign of James IV. John O Groat and his brothers settled at Caithness and formed eight households of the O Groat name. A precedence dispute led Old Johnnie O Groat to build an octagonal house with eight doors and a central round table, making the head of every family equally seated. The octagonal house became famed in Great Britain, though its site is now marked only by grass mounds.
