County Democratic Executive Committee Sets August Primary
At 1 PM the Calhoun county Democratic Executive Committee met in the city court room and called a primary for August 25. Twenty-two members were present. Chairman Henderson was absent due to illness. The body elected W. J. Griffin as chairman and adopted resolutions for a county primary nominating two representatives two commissioners and twenty six committee members. A separate resolution instructs our state senators and representatives to vote for re election of Senator E W Pettus to the United States Senate.

Tragedy in Ensley Ends with Shooting Near Street
In Birmingham on July 26 Oscar Reid aged 19 and Mrs Bobbie Englett were shot by two Black men in a vacant lot. Reid tried to detain them, was wounded fatally, and a posse pursued one assailant into the woods while the other was captured. Englett was wounded in the hip but survived.

Fire damages Jebeles Bakery on Noble Street
At 1:10 am Policeman Dill found the oven roof of Jebeles bakery on fire. The blaze was extinguished by the fire department with $200 in damage from fire and water. The bakery was immediately behind Jebeles store on Noble Street and could have been worse without timely discovery and rapid response.
