Washington July 23. The fate of prohibition rests with the conference committee tasked with the food control bill. Both houses disagree on liquor. whiskey remains banned while beer and wine face undecided treatment. The Senate backs a three member food control commission, but the House supports a single dictator. The administration insists on the one man dictatorship.
President Ison announced in the White House that he will settle the shipping controversy regardless of opinions from Chairman Denman of the Shipping Board or Maj. Goethals of the Emergency Shipping Corporation. He aims to evolve a plan to begin work immediately on the emergency fleet and will not summon Goethals or Denman to confer today.
The Evening ar hy S invites tract advertisers to a banquet at Weathers Cafe on Noble Jet Tuesday at eight. Merchants with ad contracts will attend to discuss cooperation with publishers and boost advertising impact. Several speedings will be made. A separate item notes an auto accident near Northville on July 23 causing fatalities for Mr. and Mrs. Proctor of Morristown.
Ingalls Iron Works of Birmingham completed the West Aniston plant for the Southern Manganese Corporation in steel and concrete. First steel run came 45 days after signing the contract and 12 days after first column. The 240 by 63 by 45 foot structure faced rugged hauling over dirt roads to deliver steel cement bricks and heavy transformers for four furnaces.
The new branch post office will open at Camp McClellen tomorrow morning under J. T. Coleman. It will be a branch of the city post office under Fortmaster O. M. Reynolds, with 580 letters addressed to Camp McClellen reaching their destination. Telegraph offices of Postal and Western Union are expected to open at the camp tomorrow.

A Brooklyn man writes to Mrs. Sallie Mae Curtis offering monthly support for a baby she helps, asking for confidential figures on care costs. The baby currently is at St Lukes hospital thanks to Mrs. Curtis.
Paris reports that despite concentrated troops and forceful bayonet assaults the German offensive on the Aisne front failed. Infantry fighting raged all day Sunday with heavy artillery duels heard across the Aisne and Ailette rivers.
Berlin dispatch reports Kaiser Wilhelm II met with Reichstag leaders including Socialists in Amsterdam before setting off for the eastern front. He predicted that ruthless measures would continue, with further details continued on page four.
Volunteer enlistments remain open for the regular army despite number draws. Men with drawn numbers can still apply at recruiting offices, but those who skip enlistment and are later called before the exemption board cannot reapply voluntarily. Recruiters anticipate a rush as qualified men may later be drafted. Those who enlist receive training under experienced officers. Names of men who registered and decided to enlist last week include Will Ervin, Paul Morris, Howard A. Parris, John A. Harvey, Thowan M. Jones, James H. Lasnett, Grady Crawford, Anselm J. Ashcraft.
