Charles Romo, a young white man convicted on burglary, tried to escape the city jail by prying bricks with nails and a pine knot. Guards discovered the hole, he was shackled, searched, and put to work on the streets. A note seeking help was found, claiming he would kill if needed. He will be closely watched.
In West Point Georgia on July 21 the local Negro community discusses a proposed government pension plot. Organizers claim pensions for all who pay 85 to join a dubious society. Several residents have paid, but the operators remain unexposed and likely reap large profits from gullible participants.
Bellamy a Burlington Iowa locomotive fireman describes a near fatal decline before taking Electric Bitters. He credits the tonic with restoring strength and appetite. The ad promotes the product as a life restoring remedy with guaranteed satisfaction from local druggists.
An Anniston Trades' Council meeting will decide officers for six months with several candidates in the race. Charles C. Echard has withdrawn, leaving others like H. H. Brown of the Carpenters' Union possible contenders amid expected lively competition. The Invincibles traveled to Dalton Georgia and easily defeated the Dalton club 14 to 8. In Birmingham on July 21 twenty six suits were filed by depositors of the defunct Bessemer Savings bank against T. J. Cromwell the runaway president. Plaintiffs claim the receivership is unauthorized as the bank never had corporate existence and Cromwell operated the institution as a sole business.
If the contention of these twenty six plaintiffs is upheld by the courts they will attach and recover all of their money, harming the remaining depositors through their legal action and priority claims.

Trials of alleged counterfeiters run to ground here opened before Commissioner Randolph this morning. Bob Carter and John Powell face charges of passing counterfeit money as testimony proceeds and multiple witnesses are summoned. Dee Ponder, Jim Shamblee, and Peter Noah have separate trials scheduled for the coming days with a verdict expected later in the week.
Several thousand Elks gather in Baltimore as canvassing covers candidates for chief offices. Joseph P. Panning of Indianapolis is favored for grand exalted ruler with no opposition expected. Re-election of George A Reynolds grand secretary and Samuel A Needs grand treasurer appears secure. Also to be addressed tomorrow are recognizing the Benevolent and Protective Army of Elks and rules for the Elks home at Bedford City Virginia.

Washington July 21 The War Department released Capt W H Johnston report on Alabama National Guard under the new militia law. While creditable in parts the inspection reveals insufficient small arms practice lax drill attendance and poor equipment care. Officers lack exams and many units admit only election members with transportation gaps hindering readiness.
