Amsterdam July 16 The German ship of state staggers under a political storm as Dr George Michaelis is named chancellor. Press largely welcomes him but waits for clear war aims and policy lines. The Reichstag meets this week for his first policy reveal.
McPeak of Birmingham, a newspaper circulation expert, joins The Star as Circulation Manager. The Star’s subscription list is growing rapidly and demands a larger force to improve daily delivery. He will lead a county wide sub rider campaign to extend reach for advertisers and boost business.
Anniston mobilization camp designated Camp McClellan to host troops from New Jersey Maryland Delaware District of Columbia and Virginia for intensive training. Farmers on the 16000 acre government reservation must move to accommodate reception work. Alabama draft may mobilize here adding 13612 men before transfer to Macon Georgia.
Birmingham July 16 The time limit for receiving applications for the second officers training camp has been extended to men aged twenty five who are graduates of an accredited educational institution with income at least 1500 per year and to men twenty five who are high school graduates with income at least 2000 per year. Applications should be made in person where possible.
J H Overall, the confessed mob leader, and nineteen others including Italians Russians and Poles were arrested as military authorities move to prosecute rioters. Foreigners fled the area by train or wagon evacuating Bonne Terre and Flat River with many injured and clinics crowded.
Geneva reports that four of the largest submarines of the latest type attacked United States transports carrying American troops to France. The attackers were damaged or sunk by shell fire from the convoy of American warships, according to an unconfirmed report received.
Alabama troops plan assembly at Macon Georgia divisional camp shortly after August 1. Training to begin as soon as assembled with orders for rapid movement. First regiment encamped at Brewton and to Montgomery next. First cavalry near Montgomery and second infantry moved from Birmingham.
Montgomery July 16. Robert Spivey of Pike county, convicted of murder, was granted a permanent parole by the executive department on Governor Hendersons order Saturday. Spivey had been at liberty on a temporary parole.
St Louis reports the Norwegian liner Kristinafjord, after striking rocks off Cape Race, will be floated if weather cooperates. Three holds filled with water but all 1,202 passengers have been landed.
Portland city officials allow George Green to keep his pig if he bathes and cleans the animal daily. He agreed to wash and scrub the pig every day so his family may have pork this fall.
Washington reports only a handful of lawmakers sought draft influence or disability pleas, while most accept the war demands. Editors warn that true loyalty will be tested when draftees leave for the trenches, as public awakening and preparedness must persist beyond April’s declaration of war.
Washington July 16 The senate opened the final round of five weeks fighting over the food control bill as Republican and Democrat leaders resume a conference to frame a compromise measure conforming to the administration’s ideas. Conferees hope to present plans before tonight’s adjournment.
Montgomery July 16 Special official announcement by William L Martin attorney general that the Montgomery county grand jury will be called to indict operators and inmates of immoral houses near the military camps. All are warned to leave Montgomery as federal authorities demand enforcement to protect soldiers and the training camp.
Washington July 16 Joseph Davies of the federal trade commission will chair the first major hearing in the new federal food price investigation. The department of agriculture and the food administration cooperate. The session will focus on meat and is expected to be highly impactful.
Senator Gore arranged a congressional hearing with seven New York East Side women to testify about hardships from high prices in the Ghetto. Hoovers to receive them. Rankin seeks White House hearing. aims to press food administration and Congress for relief.
San Francisco July 16 The case of Joseph J Scott former collector for the district was taken up for trial in the United States district court He is indicted on charges of embezzling government funds and wine tax stamps and was dismissed from service following the charges
Special report from Montgomery notes that Alabama may have 434 790 fewer residents than expected after the 1910 census. The 1910 count stood at 2 138 093, with a revised 1917 estimate of 1 946 536 after applying military service registrations. The shortfall is blamed on northern and eastern migration of Black residents, creating economic strain for southern farmers.
