Shipping losses rise as American vessels are sunk amid evolving war aims negotiations.
Washington reports the draft quotas for the new national army totaling 687000 with Alabama to furnish 15612 and Tennessee 14565. Drafts may begin Monday if district boards complete by Saturday night. drawing will determine order for registration and later service, with each number representing about 4000 men.

Mrs J A Rountree of Birmingham state president of the United Daughters of the Confederacy will speak at the Alabama Hotel at eight o clock tonight. She was invited to attend by the rural U D C station and had been expected at four this afternoon but missed her train.

Funeral of Carey J. Ayers sporting editor of the Anniston Star held at Ingram farm north of the city. Rev Leon M Latimer led a large service with about forty motor cars in attendance. Interment followed at Hillside cemetery with elaborate floral tributes. out of town relatives Micert J. Lyman and Mrs Mary Underwood Ayers arrived for the funeral.

Montgomery July 13 Special W EK Daniel who killed William Ganaway at Wy lam Jefferson county years ago was granted a parole by Governor Henderson to care for his family and his brother's family facing hardship. Daniel convicted of manslaughter served about two years. One protest filed by the assistant solicitor. Other convicts named include Cap Stramler ten months and twenty days for violation of prohibition laws Jake Wakler assault with intent to murder Holt and Redas Scruggs perjury two years.
Gov. Lowden ordered a board of inquiry to convene in East St. Louis to investigate Hillness guardsmen on duty July 2 and the mob violence that burned houses. The process will determine district stands and second picks as numbers are drawn publicly to assign future liability.
Atilio Gate told Magistrate Naumer he kept his dog on duty during hot days to replace an errand boy, claiming he was short of help. Gate was fined $2 for violation of local dog laws as the pup served patrons by fetching beer.

Watchington July 12 Camp Virginia will be the official name of the army cantonment at Caan Va. It was officially announced as the designated site for military housing and operations.
Montgomery July 13 Special Friends of General Robert B Steiner press for protection of his Alabama command as War Department contemplates national service drafts. Wilson proclamation raises issue of colonels not included, while Steiner’s standing with War Department and General Leonard Weed is cited to justify remaining in command.
Birmingham July 12 R M Ingram Jr long associated with Ingram’s Lithia Water Birmingham buys H M Newsome’s stake in Newsome’s Place at 1921 Third Ave North for about 15009. The business will be renamed Newcome’s Ice Cream with Mrs J F Krane in charge. Ingram to move to Birmingham and lead the enterprise with cousins T A Seren and W S Seren assisting.
