Last night an incendiary fire consumed a church and a nearby schoolhouse in Beat 3. Investigators believe the act stemmed from a church feud with threats and warnings prior to the destruction. Residents in town expressed resolve to find and punish the culprits, with possible arrests anticipated.
The Rathbone lodge No. 68 Knights of Pythias installed its semi annual officers in Oxford last night led by A C Minter of Montgomery. Officers named include J R Turner as Chancellor Commander and C C McCraw as Master of Finance after a large audience witnessed the ceremony.
John M. Stilwell and J. J. Farmer plan a new Alabama Pipe and Castings Company plant near United States Cast Iron Pipe and Foundry in Anniston. They will convert reclaimed iron from Elliott dumps into sash weights, brake shoes and washers. The firm, with about 25 to 30 workers, targets July 20 operation and a $10,000 incorporation.
The International Association of Accident Underwriters opens its twentieth annual meeting at the Motel Frontenac with President H G B Alexander of Chicago presiding. The three day program includes officer and committee reports and speeches by A T Votys Ohio insurance commissioner J W Barry Michigan commissioner and F F Canty London Guarantee and Accident Company chief of the claim department.
The Fourth district Sunday school convention will be held at the Piedmont Methodist church on Sunday July 21. The program lists devotional exercises, welcome address by W J Brock, several addresses on Sunday school topics, a primary class, teacher work, church member duties, discussions, and adjournment. Special to the Star from New York reports Chester Fe Runyan former Wind sor Trust Company teller was indicted on a charge of stealing nearly $100,000 and entered a not guilty plea with option to withdraw and enter a motion by Monday. His lawyer plans to have an alienist examine the defendant, signaling a likely mental fitness defense.
Washington July 9 naval officers dispute a Japanese admiral’s slurs on American bravery yet favor a quick Japanese government disavowal. The navy will dispatch 16 battleships cruisers and 2 gunboats and 6 destroyers to the Pacific for a total of 32 vessels with younger captains and a rebuilt fleet strategy.

Gadsden depot of the Louisville and Nashville railroad on Ninth Street was partly destroyed by fire yesterday afternoon. Most records and telegraph instruments were saved. The station, a key relay point on the Mineral division, will cause inconvenience until repairs are completed. Origin of the fire is unknown.
Henry Snow a Clay County negro described as crazy was brought to the city by Frank Wakefield and delivered to Sheriff LeGrand for safe keeping until a Friday trial before Judge Crook. He had wandered Rabbittown yesterday clad only in a shirt and entered several houses demanding food. He is said to have threatened residents and injured a man with a gunshot wound.
