Berlin reports a new regular Bremen to Pacific South American coast steamship service to be inaugurated tomorrow. The Kosmos Steamship Company will operate the route, formed by interests linked to North German Lloyd and Roland companies.
Baltimore, January 25 article states Senator Tillman will be the principal speaker at the fourth annual banquet of the North peiety of Baltimore held at the Hotel Bennett tonight. The event marks significant reparations completed for the gathering.
A. D. Ellis, a L N railroad car inspector, was crushed to death yesterday afternoon at the local shops when a moving train on the same track struck the car he was working under. His right thigh was crushed, his head injured, and he died at the scene. Funeral services were held at 3:30 this afternoon at his home with interment in Edgemont cemetery. he leaves a wife and three daughters aged 12, 9, and 4.
In New York on January 25 Mrs. Charles J. Holman mother of Evelyn Nesbit Thaw stated she will not testify against Harry Thaw. Evelyn Thaw arrived with her chorus girl companion as court opened. The jury pool proceeded with eight jurors rejected. Howard R. Thayer sworn as sixth juror.
General Manager H A McCord denies rumors that Western Steel Car and Foundry would close and explains layoffs due to investment in modern machinery. He notes last year 240 men worked in the lumber department, $10,000 was spent on equipment, and the plant now has greater capacity.
In a five chapter style recap the City Council motions to halt further salary payments to City Milk Inspector Crabtree until a department report is filed. Alderman Wikle urges the mayor to inspect dairies enforce milk purity laws and revoke permits for violators.
In Tangier Morocco on January 25 Raisuli's forces defeated the sultan's troops in a pitched battle. Largely heavy losses reported for the sultan's side while Raisuli's casualties remain unknown. Anxiety mounts among natives and foreign residents.
The advertisement touts Chamberlains Salve for skin diseases with immediate relief from itching and burning and says it soon cures. It notes the salve is useful for sore nipples and is for sale by J. L. Wikle.
Mayor Kilby announces a compromise in the estate case of Franklin L. Ivey against the city. The settlement totals 1,638.33 with 500 paid now and the balance in two and four monthly installments following a fatal fall from a Trigg Furniture wagon into a city ditched sewer line.
Anniston Electric and Gas Co seeks a 10 year extension to its 20 year gas franchise. General Manager Howard W. Sexton told the city council after returning from New York that a further extension hinges on bringing the Little River water power with 5 000 horsepower within five years. If not done the extension becomes null and void. The council favored the measure, and Sexton noted a $100 000 plan if water power arrives. The extension would interact with gas price reductions as population grows.
Council discussed Sunday closing rules after Jebeles candy kitchen and soda stand complained of discrimination. City ordinance conflicted with state law, delaying enforcement and prompting a plan to amend to align with state rules.
City council last night vetoed an ordinance requiring pool rooms to open at 10 am, except those in hotels. Mayor Kilby sought $100 to pay Weakley & Weakley for charter relief work. Poles on Noble Street to be removed. telegraph poles and steel replacements ordered on East Tenth Street with penalties of 100 dollars per case.
Seaboard Air Line will place an order for 2500 freight cars in a few days. Of these, 1500 will be box cars and 1000 will be econ structed gondola style for coal traffic. The program targets the south and western extension from the Clinchfield coal fields as demand grows.
Ernest Ward, recently confined for treatment at a Tuscaloosa area asylum, escaped and rode a freight to the city this morning. He reports a prior fight at Gate City with a furnace worker and a white ally, showing a swollen jaw and a bruised mouth. Officials say he was discharged from court and sent back to the asylum for further care, with authorities responsible for the escape and return.
A local source urges the Commercial Club to lobby for transferring the Mobile division railroad superintendent’s offices from Wilton to Anniston. He claims the railroad favors the shift if given a proper invitation and swift action.
Before Judge Crook in County court this afternoon the following dispositions were noted. N A Lapsley acting as county attorney, Will and Carrie Forbes faced decoying a child and were not pressed. Callie Ross discharged on the same charge. John Morris charged with stealing an overcoat owned by James Cunningham of Oxford, coat returned. John Henry charged with larceny of $80 from Rosa Williams, proprietor of a West Tenth Street restaurant, bound over to the grand jury.
