Washington reports the death of Queen Victoria causes widespread sorrow. The Senate adopted a resolution expressing sincere deploration and ordered it engrossed and sent to the Prime Minister of Great Britain. The resolution credited Her Majesty with noble virtues and great renown.
Washington January 23 The House adopted a resolution expressing profound regret and sympathy for the Zinglish people on account of the death of the Jaueen.
Secretary Hay cables to Ambassador Choate in London expressing profound sorrow and sympathy for the death of the Queen of England. The report notes rare tributes including the national ensign at half mast and the House of Representatives adjournment in memory of the monarch.
Washington on January 23 faced four days of mounting anxiety as officials prepared for news of the death of a key figure. The report indicates a solemn mood across government circles as details remained scarce and expectations ran high.
At the Camp Pelham United Confederate Veterans meeting in city hall a committee was chosen to report at the next meeting on a New Orleans camp resolution asking President McKinley to attend the Memphis reunion set for May 28. Some members oppose inviting the president. others favor. A color bearer, A J Connor, was elected at Saturday's gathering. The reunion in Memphis will last three days or more. The ladies of Anniston are urged to present a new flag for the camp. All members await the report with interest.
Miss Willie Kelly spoke at Parker Memorial Baptist church on customs in China. She described dress, idols, and beliefs to a filled audience of ladies and children. She plans to sail March 15 from San Francisco aboard the America Mar as a Southern Baptist missionary, with Dr. and Mrs T W Ayers among the passengers.

Mrs Jane M Zaner aged about 80 died at her home five miles from Heflin after a long residence in the area. She was noted for charity and kind words and will be buried in Heflin tomorrow. Her husband and children mourn her loss as neighbors recall her good deeds. Her son S S Zaner traveled to Anniston to buy a casket for her remains.
Effective October 1 Southern Railway begins operating the Pullman Sleeper from Birmingham Alabama to Richmond Virginia. Train No 36 leaves Birmingham at 4 40 pm with return on No 35 arriving Birmingham at 11 85 am. The service aims to offer improved passenger comfort and convenience. Montgomery January 25 Governor Samford yesterday announced his staff selections. Named are Charles Henderson inspector general Francis G Caffey judge advocate general J Gray Thomas surgeon general W Ashcraft chief of engineers B L Montgomery quartermaster general D R K Burgess chief of ordnance A H Stevens paymaster general Lee Echols commissary general A A Wiley inspector general of rifle practice with rank of colonel Richard J Adams aide camp Thos W Peagier aide camp with rank of lieutenant colonel of cavalry. Messrs Holt Stevens Surges and Wiley are the only ones heeap pointed upon the staff.
Dr. B Dudley Williams of Oxford has decided to run as a candidate for delegate to the Constitutional convention. He is a prominent Alabama figure admired by many and is expected to receive strong support from friends and supporters.

Mrs. Savage died last night at her daughter Mrs Morgan Marti home in Glen Addie after a long painful illness. She was known for Christian character and a useful life. The remains were taken to Chattanooga, her old home, for interment tomorrow afternoon.
