The city’s public schools face severe overcrowding prompting officials to assess capacity. Administrators describe crowded classrooms and strained resources as families call for immediate action and planned temporary solutions.
Supt Murphey reports crowded city schools Wilmer Pine Leighton and other campuses with 1412 current pupils after 1438 total enrollment January 1. He cites potential state compulsory education, tax relief bills, heating and ventilation issues including Leighton Avenue and Fifth Ward, and notes $2500 state aid this year to expand staff.
A representative of a proposed tri state baseball league visited Gadsden to gauge interest from Anniston Chattanooga Rome Selma and Huntsville. If accepted Gadsden would host a first class semi professional team next season. No formal organization yet but local interest and enthusiasm run high.
A star studded benefit at the Metropolitan Opera House features Strauss Salome as the principal work with Olive Fremstad Marion Weed Van Rooy and Burran in key roles. Singers donate services, seats sold at premium, and the event aims to raise several thousand dollars for ill manager Conreid in poor health.
Special to the Star. Austin January 2 The Texas railroad commission considers an order requiring Santa Fe Southern Pacific International and Great Northern and Missouri Kansas & Texas to build a joint causeway across Galveston Bay to connect Galveston Island. The railroads oppose the measure vowing to fight it in court arguing state authority over waterways is limited by federal control. They also say traffic congestion in Galveston is not due to crossing facilities and warn the plan would cost about 5 million dollars to construct.
A prominent business leader urged that Anniston be made the headquarters of the Mobile division of the Southern Railroad, arguing its central location, superior traffic, and status as the starting point for freight to Rome and Selma. He said Wilton is a mere stop and that city leaders should lobby to move the superintendent’s office here.
Utah Senator Sutherland defended Reed Smoot in the senate arguing that Smoot should not lose his seat over his Mormon faith. He rejected charges of polygamy and highlighted Smoot's four years of exemplary service and the esteem of colleagues.
The annual gathering of Texas retail hardware dealers opened in Dallas with about 500 in attendance. Discussion focused on mail order competition and several legislative measures.

In Rochester on January 22 Edward Dabell, 75, shot his daughter Emma Dabell in the head and her companion Miss M. C. Taber through the back after a quarrel over Christian Science. Emma Dabell is not seriously hurt while Taber may die. Miss Dabell is a Christian Science nurse.
Montgomery January 22 Governor B B Comer warned he would use his big stick as the legislature balked at a public school appropriations bill. The house originally approved $300,000, then amended to $400,000, which the governor opposed. After heated debate the measure was reconsidered and an appropriation of $300,000 was passed by 83 to 73.
A telegram dated January 22 reports North Dakota suffering from a severe fuel shortage with no supply on hand. Milton, North Dakota, informs Senator Hansbrough of the crisis and accuses Great Northern of false claims of supply, urging immediate relief and IC Commission attention.
Atlanta hosts a massive Farmers' Educational and Cooperative Union gathering with about one million members. C. S. Barrett opens sessions as leaders pledge to broaden union influence, aiming to curb middlemen and exert market control on agricultural goods nationwide.

In Talladega on January 22, Turner Bruce foreman of a labor gang discharged Al Lackey. Facing after church, Lackey slapped Bruce’s hat lid, Bruce retaliated, then Lackey drew a pistol and fired three shots. Bruce was mortally wounded. pursuit continued, report says.
