Rescuers Push Into Debris at Lick Branch Mine Tragedy
In Huntington West Virginia on January 13 a hundred rescuers fought through debris and smoke into the Lick Branch mine of the Norfolk and Western. An explosion yesterday left at least 100 dead and more than 100 trapped underground. rescuers advanced more than a mile through burning coal and slate as they hoped to reach miners still alive. No bodies had been recovered yet and a rescue party saw six corpses but could not reach them. The mine’s main entry runs four miles and rescuers seek survivors in the affected section.
