Special Correspondence RCMP Gal Dec 31 Mrs May Huff awoke from a five day sleep after the Lindale mill whistle sounded on Christmas. She initially knew little of the day but grew brighter through the day and expected to regain her normal health soon. She had not eaten or drunk since December 25 and then sought food and water.
Washington officials outline the White House reception for New Year’s Day, starting 11 a.m., with the vice president and cabinet among the first to be received. New York prepares a festive night with over 500000 dollars expected to be spent on theaters, dinners, and transport as crowds gather for 1909 celebrations.

The blaze began near J K Holloway’s 10 cent store and spread to W H Goker Co dry goods, Rome Overall factory, Dr J I Young’s dentist office, and several other stores with four firefighters sustaining injuries from falling bricks. Crawford Bros store survived with smoke and water loss. Fire crews fought eight streams into the night, preventing total destruction of the block.
