Pekin notes that Mr. Conger turned over the United States legation duties to W. W. Rockhill and will return to the United States for a six months’ vacation. The Pei Ho River should open next week, prompting an exodus of diplomats and correspondents. Li Hung Chang says the imperial court will follow once allies evacuate Pekin, and expects no further negotiation difficulties.
Dan Carter and Jesse Taylor clashed on Tenth Street last night. Carter sustained a slight back cut. Both men were arrested but Taylor escaped custody at the station and has not yet been rearrested.
Mrs Carrie Nation demands the abolition of the Carrie Nation cocktail invented by R C Willes of Binghamton and Scranton. She plans a $10 000 damages suit for the use of her name in advertising the drink. She offered Scranton lawyers a percentage of the verdict to take the case.
Pekin February 26. It is believed Hsu Chang Yu and Kih Siu, former grand secretary and prisoners of the Japanese, will be executed today under the Dowager Empress edict. Li Hung Chang sought delivery of the prisoners for immediate execution but Japanese delays require official representatives to attend. Guards will be posted to prevent suicide or escape. Provincial officials face no expected trouble.
