A petition claims that Beckham challenges Taylor’s claim to the governorship. It alleges Taylor is not the legitimate governor and seeks rulings or recognition of Beckham as the proper officeholder.
Frankfort February 15. Beckham v Taylor challenges Gov Taylor's hold on the executive office. Court action seeks to bar Taylor from duties and treasury disbursements. Deputies guard the Capitol while Dem committee discusses safety and guard policy with Custodian Thompson and Adjutant General Collier.
Messrs. John B. Knox and Amory Quion left this morning for a business trip to New York. Their visit to the cast may carry significance as both are closely identified with the Woodstock iron works, and it is hoped they will return with news that the Woodstock furnace will go into blast soon.
Anniston's industrial scene shows two yarn mills certain to be built with strong likelihood of a third. The initial mill project moves past doubt as stock sales surge and construction work accelerates, signaling a robust textile expansion in the city.
Citizens gathered at 10 o clock in the office of Mr OB Welborn to organize the Anniston Banking and Peer company project for a new $100,000 yarn mill. M A Smith was elected chairman, Archibald Menderer named secretary, and committees formed to secure subscriptions as work accelerates.
The Southern Car and Foundry company begins operations tomorrow at the Anniston plant. First car wheels produced in eight to ten years will be moulded tomorrow afternoon with import incoming from Gadsden expected by Saturday. Capacity reaches one hundred fifty wheels daily.
Editor Evening Star Camp Pelham U C received a proposition from the Lyceum Lecture Bureau to have Gen. Joe B Gordon lecture in Anniston under Camp auspices in March. His lecture titled The last days of the Con- is planned as the event.
Frank Powell and his wife Alice Powell, a white couple living near Piedmont, were brought to the city by Deputy Sheriff Woodall and jailed on a charge of behind tigering. It is alleged they sold liquor at their home to customers. A hearing before Judge Crook in county court is set for tomorrow morning.
Dr D C Green aged 65 of Florence committed suicide by leaping from his house after losing money trying impractical farming methods and failing to redeem his foreclosed farm. He left a $5,000 accident policy and many friends mourn his death as funeral plans begin.
Joatins Levy introduces a spring sampler featuring foreign and domestic weaves and trouserings. Levy's spring stock of wares will be in shortly.
London dated dispatch reports Lord Roberts leading about 40 000 infantry 7 000 cavalry and 150 guns into the Free State frontier for the first time in the war. No battle yet but tactical advantages gained. Kimberley relief seen as within reach and Bloemfontein route opened. Advance began with Hannay’s mounted infantry from Ramah toward Jacobslul.
Jack Pennington a noted Southern newspaper man and former Denver managing editor died in Los Angeles at age 61. He was son of ex Gov Pennington and well known in Anviston and the South. His wife accompanied him and many friends extend sympathy to the family.
The Bell-Weatherly company will begin building a large warehouse behind its current main building located at the corner of Gurnee and Tenth streets.
The postmaster works to secure additional rural delivery routes after already establishing two routes.
Postmaster L T Smith works to secure two additional rural routes from Anniston. One would extend state service to Peacebury Morrisville Mead and Zula. The other would reach White Plains through dense county areas. Existing routes already secured by Mr Savith will begin in March. These moves aim to provide daily free delivery to rural residents, benefiting city and county communities.
