Parker sandboat wrecked in race near Chattanooga
Special to the Star from Chattanooga dated February 6 reports a boiler explosion aboard the sandboat Parker during a race with the steamer John A. Patten near Chattanooga. One man was killed with possibly two others dead, two seriously injured. The Parker burned to the water line. Captain Thomson clung to a plank and was rescued, possibly dying. Mrs. J W Allison, Milam Thompson, a white deck hand, and a negro cook escaped by leaping into the water. The boat was valued at ten dollars.

Pioneer Citizen Laid To Rest In Calhoun County
The funeral of Mr. C. D. Fite, a Confederate veteran aged 80, was held at 2 o clock this afternoon. He died at the home of Mrs. J. B. Parker in Four Mile after a cancerous illness. Interment followed in the family burying ground. Survived by a widow and three sons, including P. M. Fite of Vicksburg, Mississippi, and S. M. Fite, with other relatives in the county. Mr. Fite had lived in Calhoun County 65 years and was a member of the Baptist Church for 50 years. His daughter and a son also noted among survivors.
