Special to the Star reports six Italians found dead in a burned tenement in New Orleans. Police believe the victims were killed by a secret Mafia society after being marked for death, with firemen called to control the blaze as authorities struggle to cope.
Eminent men of science from five national societies gather at Brown University in Providence for a three day meeting starting today. Attendees include representatives from the American Economic Association Bibliographical Society of America American Sociological Society American Historical Association and the American Political Science Association with several hundred members present.
Hundreds of college men from across the United States gather in Birmingham to attend the biennial Alpha Tau Omega congress. The event, opened with a welcome by Governor Jelks at city hall, marks the fraternity’s postwar effort to heal North South tensions and features founders and numerous chapters from Maine to California and Texas to Michigan.

Mr and Mrs Jim Hughes formerly of this city now live in Newnan Ga. their seven year old twin daughter died in Georgia while playing near a grate fire. The remains were brought through the city and buried at Rock Run today as friends express sympathy.
A DeArmanville couple, Mr and Mrs Tom Gilpin, faced a tragedy when their infant died in a house fire last Saturday. They left the child wrapped in quilts on chairs. upon returning they found the quilts and clothing aflame and the baby dead. A passerby quickly extinguished the blaze before the house burned further.
In New York on December 26 a riding academy groom Thomas Connolly was badly injured in a pitchfork duel with fellow groom James Cassidy. Cassidy is under arrest as Connolly’s condition deteriorates after a quarrel over a Christmas gift.
A New York grand jury met to clear up investigations into the New York Life Insurance Company. Several bookkeepers were examined and the only charge under review concerns the Prussian bond transaction. Indictments, if any, are expected by Friday.

Jacksonville December 26 Richard Walker a colored prisoner who beat his wife and brother in law was cremated in the city calaboose Monday night about 8 30. Coroner J L Murphy of Anniston is holding an inquest here today. The jail fire destroyed the only inmate and two theories arise as to the blaze either vengeance by enemies or the prisoner self incendiarism to gain escape amid the chaos. The jail sits near the town square by the big spring and could not be saved after the fire was noticed.
