Special to the Star reports that forty factory workers perished when the Neva ice collapsed during their morning crossing. About 100 were on the ice center. sixty saved themselves, while the rest were washed away beneath the ice.

The Ide cotton mills of Jacksonville call a stockholders meeting for January 14 to increase capital to 750000 and add a 25000 spindle mill. Plans include a power plant and enhanced warehouse facilities as Jacksonville expands with the Seaboard railroad and city improvements.

In Evansville on December 11, William Auberry and Shirley Erwin face first degree murder charges in three counts linked to the August 15 Southern railroad wreck at Maren Pike County. Investigating miners collided with detectives, a switch was spiked, killing three crewmen. Auberry and Erwin were arrested a month later on circumstantial evidence.
