Miller Dunn gang member escapes Birmingham stockade
John D. West, a member of the Miller Dun gang, escaped from Pratt Mines stockade around 5 50 Saturday evening by slipping a beard from the fence. Guards pursued him toward Thomas, but he was later captured in Anniston in 1900 with Frank Miller, who was hanged for killing policeman Kirkley. West had pleaded guilty to robbing a Standard Oil office and was serving a thirty year sentence.

At the port 5:30 officers met them and Haggard and British legation members boarded the cruiser Redistribution while the German charge d affaires boarded the German cruiser Veneto. They left without notifying the Venezuelan government to avoid demonstrations.
