Comer Leads for Governor in Alabama Weak Returns

Special to The Star from Birmingham reports meagre returns from about half the counties and full returns from larger towns show Comer leading for governor though results remain uncertain. Cunningham may rise in later tallies. Knox and Bankral lead the alternate Senate race with Oates Clarke and Fitts gaining. Secretary of State race is unsettled with McGhee, Julian and Sorsby hovering near, and counting may stretch past dawn.

Comer and Knox Win in Etowah

Adsden August 27. County leaders report results in Etowah with Comer winning the governorship and Knox secure the alternate senate seat alongside Bankhead. Gray named lieutenant governor, Brandon for auditor, McGhee for secretary of state, Crook for agriculture, Skeggs and Harris for railroad commissioners, Tyson for chief justice, and Bilbro for supreme court justice.

Cunningham Carries Calhoun By Close Vote In Primary

Complete returns from ten precincts show Cunningham leading Comer in the Calhoun county governor race by a narrow margin. O Neal and Crook sweep county tickets, with Coleman and Weakley carrying the associate and chief justices seats respectively. Knox and Craig high in alternate senator and congress races.

Home Candidate Sweep Across City Reveals Substantial Support

In a light city vote, home candidates won by handsome majorities. Governor Cunningham drew notable strength, with key allies McGhee, Coleman, Crook, Knox also carrying the city. ONeal led lieutenant governor contenders, while Morgan and Pettus topped the U.S. Senate race. Continued results list numerous officers and party totals.

Special to the Star. Early tallies from 42 Alabama counties show Comer leading for governor by about 5 000 to 7 000 votes with slow overall returns. Bankhead Johnston and Knox lead for alternate senator, while Tyson and Weakley are near for chief justice. Auditor winner unclear pending official count. Harris and Henderson nominated for associate railroad commissioners.
