Harry A. Garfield, president of Williams College, is named by Herbert C. Hoover to head a commission to fix the price of the 1917 wheat crop. The action is described as the most revolutionary government wartime measure yet.
London reports fifteen ships over 1 600 tons sunk by submarines during the past week. Three smaller vessels and two fishing boats were also lost. Survivors allege German crews looted some ships before sinking them.
Definite rumors of disaster to Russian forces spread as reports claim Germans seized Riga and Von Hindenberg plans a major offensive. Officials acknowledge a serious Russian situation and note critical dispatches reaching Ambassador Francis.

A medical training company of 117 men arrived today at Camp Mc Clellan from Fort Fthen Allen, VI. They will act as hospital orderlies. A bakery company is expected from Fort Oglethorpe this afternoon.
Washington reports guardsmen from Wyoming Washington Idaho and Montana will form the forty first division under Gen Liggett to be shipped to France. Embarkation date not announced.

Soldiers trained in cantonments in Anniston Columbia Augusta Atlanta Macon Montgomery and other Southern cities will employ the eight inch blade built into a brass knuckles frame alongside the bayonet.
Atlanta August 23 United States Senator Thomas W Hardwick faces a critical challenge from William D Upshaw editor of The Golden Age and noted lecturer Upshaw announces his candidacy to succeed Hardwick and will focus on Hardwicks opposition to prohibition parcel post marine development and Wilson wartime policies Upshaw previously campaigned for Dr L G Hardman for governor and is considered a strong public speaker
