Chief Justice J Harry Covington asked by the President to investigate labor unrest and IWW demonstrations in western mining camps. The Justice Department is too busy to handle the inquiry at present.
London reports a ten mile Allied advance in Belgium with fighting through the night. More than 2,000 Germans captured. British gains reach Lens district and near Ypres. Objectives include the German railway base and the town of Roulers as Langemarck pressure extends to within miles of Staden.
Berlin reports French troops join Russo Rumanian forces on the Moldavian front with 3,500 Russo Rumanian prisoners captured and to be sent to Austrian camps. Washington notes US military growth and navy plans amid pope peace proposals. Paris says St Quentin cathedral burned as French and British push in Belgium amid renewed German terror.
The Federal Trade Commission is in secret session in Washington today to discuss the coal situation with emphasis on the midwest.
The arrival of Madame Don Bel Isario Parris wife of the minister from Panama to the United States has drawn attention in Washington society. She is noted as one of the beauties of the Latin embassies and is expected to become a popular hostess in the national capital.
M B Wellborn chairman of the Atlanta federal reserve board said Hibernia Bank and East Company of New Orleans has become a member of the federal reserve board. The bank has sources of about 35 million dollars and the move could affect other state banks still holding out.
Capt. Hare of Camp McClellan depot quartermaster said all bids for government wood at the camp were rejected as too high. He now seeks to buy standing timber near the camp with government cutting rights and will negotiate with local timber owners in the area.
Washington August 17 officers of the regular army will hold top commands in the new national army. The War Department announced the names of 145 colonels of infantry and 46 colonels of field artillery. Most promotions go to captains and junior majors.
Transfer firms multiply near Camp McClellan as Herring Transfer Company with 2000 capital forms, Birmingham’s A Transfer and Taxicab Company with 20000 capital opens soon, and Calhoun Transfer adds to the surge. Rail spur extension cuts road haulage, with freight now twenty cars daily unloaded at the camp grounds, easing prior towing.
Tokio reports Japan has joined allied powers in denying passport access to delegates bound for the Socialist peace conference in Stockholm.

Calhoun county ladies are urged to join a knitting campaign with guidance from Red Cross leaders at headquarters in the Alabama Power Building Twelfth and Noble streets.
A sixteen member St. Clair county farmer delegation will tour Calhoun county next Monday to view agricultural improvements. Demonstration Agent L. G. Prentice plans to lead Calhoun farmers in meeting the visitors at Ohatchee at nine o clock and escort them through the Alexandria valley to Anniston camps White Plains and back via the Choccolocco Valley to Oxford.

Beat 7 farmer G D Palmer swore warrants for the arrest of neighbors M R Green Emory Whitmore P W Whitmore Levi Upton and Bob Somlerville accusing them of disturbance and weapon attack. Palmer says the men appeared at his home while he was in bed and fired shots. He showed a .88 calibre bullet found in the woodwork.
