Special Telegram reports Mobile endured a high storm with six inches of Thursday rain and sixty mph winds. The city lost telegraph service for hours while the coast saw extensive damage to bath houses and homes. one fort vessel dragged anchor and the shell road was ruined. No lives were confirmed lost.
A tropical storm near Mobile August 17 brought winds up to seventy miles an hour and cut all communications. The yacht Ariel with a Mobile party reportedly wrecked near Battles, and the Mayflower foundered with passengers taking refuge on Cat Island. Fort Morgan and Mississippi Sound islands cut off. reports of drownings await confirmation.
Aug 17 report says the storm caused little damage within New Orleans. fatalities occurred near the river mouth. The coast faces severe hits to rice and orange farms while a large house toppled killing Rosa Walker and three others. Tug Biloxi crew Blaine Davidson and Veter Yea drowned as boat vanished.
