Eight or ten wealthy Boston residents in New York for a wallpaper convention fought on the Gilsey House sidewalk. Two were seriously knife wounded and others battered. Notables include Joseph A. Conroy and aldermen Patrick Bowen and Joseph J. Norton. The fray moved inside the hotel before staff separated the combatants.
Yesterday afternoon a large clock arrived and was hauled by two drays to the office of S Houser and Wolsoncroft where it was unloaded and stored until the court house tower is ready. The clock drew much attention as it was moved up Noble Street and stood before the Lombian building.
Lively notice lists prices and contacts in a compact ad style. Donahoo & Co. and R. O. Watson advertise coal stove wood and drays with telephone numbers 82 and 72 respectively. Includes a Livery outfit update and a brief line about Levi's Leaders.
A Huntsville resident found a large tarantula in a bunch of bananas yesterday. The man, Mr. W. Eb. Lynsky, kept the spider in a glass cage and the young tarantulas were given hot baths. Local concern arose about potential danger if the spiders had escaped the home.
August 15 report from Cleveland states five men were killed by a fire at a temporary waterworks two miles off Cleveland. Four were injured and several others burned as crews battled the blaze. The incident follows a mistaken blaze in the vicinity.
The Peaceburg camp meeting ended this morning marking one of the county’s most successful gatherings in years. The preaching was unusually fine and the event drew many attendees for the week long session.
Chicago Aug 15 The Western Unions refuse to strike and renewals of charters are not granted. Assistant Secretary M F Tighe of the Amalgamated Association arrived to seek revocation but the action from Saturday night stands. Meanwhile in Pa and Ohio, National Tubs at McKeesport closes while Painter mill in this era and Crescent plant resume with pan union workers.
Advertisement claims the pills cure a sick liver and restore a rosy, healthy complexion. Sold for 250 at Elam Drug Co.'s drug store.
In Houston a bolt of lightning struck a hearse after a five year old girl appeared dead. The metallic coffin burst open and the driver was stunned while mourners reached the wagon. The girl was found alive and crying, with physicians calling the state cataleptic. Local residents whisper of a miracle.
