No settlement reached and a further hearing is scheduled on a proposed ship building plant for Alabama. Proceedings continue as parties await resolution.
Amalgamated executive board received a telegram from J. P. Morgan rejecting a wage conference restart after the dispute at the Lincoln Hotel. The union insists settlement can only follow terms set by C. M. Schwab and F. H. Cary. An official said the terms are unjust and unacceptable. Morgan's reply is awaited by mail with little hope of compromise.
A Spaniard named Joseph Zizaro was pursued after seizing a man and child in the mountains. He surrendered to armed officers near Pratt 18 miles east, carrying a revolver and a stiletto, and was jailed this morning.
A temporary registration plan was adopted with a three-person county board of registrars, paid per day, to issue certificates and register voters aged after August 1, 1902. The plan, limited by population, sets a sixty day cap per county and requires poll tax of $1.50, with appeals to the circuit court.
Florence Alabama August 2 The article recalls the capture of Lieutenant George Dewey by Confederate troops and describes how the Mississippi caught fire after its hull and machinery were disabled by cotton bale fuel. It notes the later fame of Dewey as a naval hero in Manila and contrasts it with the 1862 bombardment at Fort Hudson.
The month just closed was the hottest ever in the United States with a 40 day heat wave from June 18 to July 27. An average of over 100 degrees occurred in half the states affected. Ohio Indiana Illinois Michigan Iowa Missouri Kansas Nebraska reported extreme heat with 108 degrees in St Louis and Michigan tied for highest.
