A stylish woman posing as a mental health advocate for her supposedly religious-maniac husband lured a jeweler into showing diamonds valued at $5,000. She returned with a clerk and drove to a physician's home where she vanished after the doctor, fooled by the staged checkup, allowed the patient to enter the study.
Messrs Joe Graben and George W Griffin of Lineville were crossing Horse Block mountain with two guns purchased recently. One of the machines fell, burying Griffin beneath it and seriously injuring him. Relatives fear internal injuries and severe crush injuries to chest and limbs. Graben escaped unharmed. Both men are well known in Oxford where they frequently visit.
Mr and Mrs M F Allday of Selma arrived in Anniston to visit Mr H H McGuire and family. Allday a Selma ticket agent came on the advice of Dr Gay, physician at the Selma sanitarium, who touts Anniston as the healthiest city in Alabama and among the healthiest in the South. The doctor recommended the trip for the patient.
Des Moines dispatch reports Governor A B Cummins likely to be nominated by the Republican convention for governor, with Perkins opposing on tariff revision and standing pat. The race reflects broader party friction, possible Senate ambitions, and shifts in leadership as over 1600 delegates convene for the nominating session.
In Washington on August 1 the Republican convention debate between stand patters and opposition dominates discussion among politicians and officeholders in the heat of summer. The contest centers on national issues and notable participants from Iowa.
In Finland the Island Fortress of Sveaborg remains critical as cannons fall silent and neither mutineers nor local troops gain an upper hand. Mutineers risk further clashes while authorities offer concessions for surrender. Socialist strikes falter as revolutionary workers cripple the government and four ironclad crews mutiny with Kronstadt-bound ships planned. In St. Petersburg Deputy Emerstein, ex-Duma member, was shot and killed while with his family. attackers fled.
At Kronstadt the wires to St Petersburg were cut during the night severing communication. Soldiers previously stationed there show an ugly mood raising fears of an outbreak. Mutineers and supporters are tearing up rail lines to block reinforcements to suppress the mutiny nearby.
In the shooting meet at Oxford Lake park Talladega Gun Club defeated the local club by 27 points. M. W. Parker of Talladega scored 24 of 25 with high marks on multiple shots. H H Constantine led the locals with multiple top scores. The two rounds ended around 4 p.m. A barbecue was served for the visitors before their evening train departure.
The library will not open today as previously stated. It will open as soon as the necessary furnishings are installed.
Oyster Bay notes the president appointed Fred Morris Dearing of Missouri as second secretary to the American legation in Havana. This marked a formal diplomatic posting announced today in the national briefing.
Charlotte August First W Y Brown married just thirty minutes when F Y Kinkaid shot him at the depot. The groom died and Kinkaid was arrested amid intense public feeling as jealousy was given as the motive.
Special to The Star Birmingham reports William Jennings Bryan twice Democratic nominee for president was unreachable in Germany. A Birmingham Commercial Club cable invitation to visit Birmingham during October’s state fair was sent to Cologne, but Western Union Cologne replies that the message was not delivered because Bryan is not known there.
At a meeting in Buffalo on August 1 the Democratic state committee designated Buffalo as the site for the next convention and set September 25 as the date. The committee adjourned to meet at the Triquois Hotel in Buffalo at 7 p.m. September 24 with no other business of importance.
J B Murphy of New York the vice president of Central Foundry Company spends the day in the city, meeting local business leaders and inspecting facilities.
In Williamsburg a bomb exploded in a rooming house early today injuring Mary Wise 29 and her 10 year old daughter with severe facial and hand wounds. Thomas Owens a plumber is said to have been the bomber and lost his left hand. Owens denies the charge and says he heard a noise in the hall before the blast.
In Atlanta on August 1 Floyd Carmith Vel, a 22 year old Black man identified by Miss Annie Poole of Lakewood, was shot by a posse in front of the Poole residence after being captured earlier that day.
Uncle Sam will fund rural free delivery carriers vacations for the first time since the service began. A congress bill provides that carriers with twelve months in service receive fifteen days off this year, with substitutes paid $600 per year, totaling about $890,900 for the program.
The Anniston Electric and Gas Co received car No. 37 from High Point NC building shops yesterday and expects another car today. A shipment of new open cars is anticipated as management installs a new turnout at the lake depot to speed passing of cars.
