French Drives Boers From Wepener With Cavalry Action

Gen. French entered town with two cavalry brigades and found Boers holding the hills at daybreak. The defenders shelled and retreated as French’s forces moved to flank. Reports say about 6,000 Boers passed through town last night to avoid a rear attack.

Grand Lodge Knights of Pythias to meet in Anniston

The Birmingham News reports the Grand Lodge gathering of Knights of Pythias will convene in Anniston next week with about three hundred delegates from across the state. Birmingham sent J B Wadsworth as Grand Chancellor and a delegation including W H Wilder and C A Moffett among others to the meeting.

Montgomery April 26 The Democratic State convention resumed work with harmony. John W Abercrombie Calhoun was renominated for state superintendent of education. Robert P McDavid Lauderdale renominated for secretary of state. Charles G Brown Jefferson renominated for attorney general. W H Matthews Marion nominated for auditor on first ballot. Explosion Hits Pretoria Arsenal Killing Ten

An explosion at a government arsenal complex in Pretoria destroyed walls and burned the building. Ten workers were killed and thirty-three injured, including manager Herr Gran. About two hundred workers, mainly French and Italians, were employed. most major machinery survived. cause is unknown.

A dispatch from New Orleans reports that twenty-two laborers were killed in a riot on Little River on the night of the 13th. The fragment notes ready made clothes and tailor made suits, with a brief quotation from Junius Levy, a tailor, on their fit and appeal.

Hercules Director Dies in Boston

George J. Richards a director in the Hercules Iron and Supply Co died Wednesday at his Boston home after a brief typhoid illness. He had spent time here recently with his friend President Weeden and many who met him were left saddened by his death. Weeden regarded Richards as a brother and mourns his untimely end.

Morning Matinee Court Session Ends Lightly

Mayor Pro Tem Kilby presided over a police court session this morning. Dollie Ross and Harriett Brown, described as South African residents, were fined 2.50 each for creating a nuisance. Montgomery April 26 William J Samford of Opelika won the Democratic nomination for Alabama governor on the third ballot at 7 30 pm The vote shifted as Ballots revealed Samford Stallings Waller and Shelley in tight contention with Samford ultimately receiving the nomination on motion of John Knox of Calhoun The third ballot was not announced as clerks tallied changes to secure Samford’s unanimous nomination

Schedule Change Improves Anniston Southern Rail Service

Beginning May 6 the Anniston division will debut an enhanced passenger schedule with new night trains Mobile to Birmingham via Selma connections to northern and eastern routes. Dining car service east and north of Attalla and Pullman sleeping cars Mobile to Chattanooga enhance comfort. Southbound arrival to Anniston moves from 11 25 to 11 50 and northbound departure from 1 40 pm to 4 10 pm, enabling same day trips for shoppers from surrounding areas.

Postoffice Fixtures Arrive for Anniston Move

The Anniston post office will relocate to the southwest corner of Noble and Tenth streets after next Sunday. New, modern fixtures arrived last night and will be installed at once. Transfer of the office from the present site to the new location will occur Saturday night and Sunday, with postmaster Smith and staff ready for business Monday morning.

Mr J M Thomas rents the old Noble boiler shop near the Georgia Pacific depot to establish a boiler sheet iron and blacksmith shop. Sparks Puzzles Kansas City in opener

Jank Sparks, Anniston's famed ball twirler now with Milwaukee, won the first game of the season at Kansas City on Tuesday. The final score favors Milwaukee as Kansas City batters struggled against Sparks who struck out two. Daub and Patten pitched for Kansas City and yielded all other runs. Edmondson & Anderson handled hauling services, and Shelnutt & Murphy provided undertaker services at 1212 Noble.
