In Winston Ga last Saturday, jury in the Samples larceny trial acquitted him after a long deliberation. Judge T. W. Coleman sharply denounced the verdict as unjust and an affront to law saying jurors cannot exercise executive clemency and noting the defendant’s drunkenness and later recollections.
A large Carnegie Hall assembly marks the opening of the National Peace Congress in New York. Governor Hughes Mayor McClellan and other dignitaries welcomed participants from America and Europe as James Bryce and William T. Stead join a program on International Views of the Peace Question featuring prominent figures such as Jane Addams Oscar S Straus and foreign ambassadors.
The president sent a letter to the peace conference this afternoon, expressing best wishes and urging international arbitration. He says he cannot push for complete disarmament by nations.
A Central of Georgia freight train No.4, led by Engineer Ben Cox, wrecked 12 miles from Eufaula causing the death of a negro brakeman and the burning of nine freight cars.
The forecast calls for showers late tonight or Tuesday in Anniston and vicinity with warmer conditions thereafter.

Special to the Star reports that bail for Harry Thaw was postponed to decide on counsel. Dan O Reilly is the only retained lawyer, claiming to replace Clifford Hartridge. Thaw reportedly struggles to raise the large bail sum as Mrs William Thaw’s fortune is strained by trial costs and relatives fear flight.
U S Senator Philander Knox of Pennsylvania is reported to defend Harry Thaw in the second trial. Cost estimates for the Thaw case vary, with total defense costs around 235 000 dollars and expert testimony costing about 45 000 dollars. Attorneys fees total about 140 000 dollars, with Delmas’s stipend rumoured up to 100 000 dollars.
New York report shows jurors from the Thaw case casting eight ballots during deliberations. Initial vote favored murder in the first degree for eight jurors with four for acquittal, then successive ballots alternated between conviction and acquittal while the counts shifted.
The City Board of Education votes to remit 450 dollars minus 280 taxed for late work on heating apparatus in public schools and 40 for freight, awaiting Peck Hammond reception. A Sunday night burglar pried open the door of Mr Clarence Hudson’s DeArmanville store and stole 700 pennies from the cash. Nothing else appears missing though other items may have been taken without signs. No clue to the thief has been found.
A runaway horse and trap near Eulaton Sunday injured four young women accompanying Mr James Cannon on a drive to Coldwater. A detached trace caused the team to bolt, overturning the trap and throwing the passengers to the ground. Miss May Dunnagan sustained a severe head woundrequiring stitches. the others suffered various injuries as the rig was badly damaged.
Trial on murder in the first degree extended from January 25 to April 12 over sixty five court days. Jury deliberated forty seven hours and five minutes. Costs to state 78 6386 and to defense 235 000. Defendant remanded to the Tombs without bail for a new trial.
In Mexico City on April 15 a four and a half minute quake caused major damage in poorer areas. The electric plant was wrecked water mains burst and walls cracked as lights failed during a preceding thunderstorm and ensuing panic.
A president Wellborn appointed a new official this morning. The decision was announced in the early hours and is expected to shape current policy direction.

A Malta Montana posse chases a lone robber who held up a stage between Malta and Zortman, escaping with 28000 in cash destined for miners in Zortman. The suspect, linked to the Kid Curry gang, is believed to have fled on fast horses, with Curry associates still in northern Montana.
Mobile, April 15. The $25,000 damages suit by Terry Moore against Collector of Port William F. Tebbetts has settled for about $1,000. The trial was set for April 17 but was compromised due to witnesses Tebbetts did not wish to call. The case arose from Tebbetts driving down Moore with his automobile.
Concord Newfoundland April 15 anther surprise is expected as an answer is filed to the petitioners supple mental bill seeking to vacate the deed of Mrs Eddy s property to three trustees on grounds she was incompetent to sign the instrument.

Macon Cobb, assault with weapon and concealed weapon, 490 days. Berry Radley, assault with weapon, 255 days. Amos Ford, grand larceny, 14 months. Judge Coleman urged moral reclamation in Belcher and Evans. No further jury cases this week. an extra term begins Monday.
The Planters Manufacturing Company of Oxford Calhoun County has been incorporated with capital stock of 100 000 by secretary of state notice. Incorporators listed as William V Bailey B M Bailey T Hoffman P N Carr and N Perkins. Purpose to own operate and conduct a cotton mill or mill for manufacture of cotton jute hemp flax and other fibres.
Linden April 15. Bondsmen of Postmaster T J Threadgill have taken charge of the Linden postoffice and will run its affairs until his accounts are settled. The postmaster's vacancy is not declared, though several applications for the job exist. Inspectors have been on site for days reviewing accounts with no definite public update.
Philadelphia April 15 A close guard is kept over the Westchester jail to prevent a mob from lynching Joseph Wilson a Negro who criminally assaulted a white girl from Parkesburg last night Wilson was arrested and hurried away for safety as threats were made against him.
James H. Eckles, president of the Commercial National Bank and former comptroller of the currency, died yesterday in Chicago at his home from heart disease. He was a prominent figure in banking and national finance.
