British inspector A. M. Amor reports Anniston factories producing shells for the Allies. More electric furnaces will be installed soon. New shells are being placed in bonded warehouses, and bonding company receipts are used as collateral to furnish ready cash.
In Anniston this week inspectors from the Anniston Ordnance Company report shells are being turned out with haste. The first shipment is expected soon as a second electric furnace foundation progresses and plans call for up to ten furnaces. The company stores shells in a bonded warehouse with warehouse receipts used as collateral to raise funds. The vice president, Theodore Swann, underwent appendicitis surgery and is recovering, delaying active participation.
Army officers warned of grave risks to U S lines of communication from Villa loyalists gathered in the Chihuahua desert near Ascension and along the Columbus to Casas Grandes motor truck route. Reports say the aim is to cut routes and isolate American stations in Mexico.
William Barton Fauld, former deputy US revenue officer, faces a third trial in city criminal court for the alleged murder of Patrolman Jack Holland. The case dates to December 23, 1914, when a visit to a restricted district led to a fatal confrontation after Holland ordered Barton from a house. The first trial ended with a hung jury and the second also resulted in a mistrial.
St. Louis April 6. The Ligget and Myers Tobacco Company raises wages by 10 percent for all employees.
The jury found Tom Rateree guilty of petit larceny in the Leatherwood Crossing robbery that led to the deaths of Arthur Gaboury and Roy Watson after their car was struck by an L and N train. Sentence has not yet been imposed.
Washington April 6 The fortification bill carries direct appropriations of 21 997 050 and authorizes the war department to enter contracts totaling 12 300 000. It is described as the largest bill of its kind ever considered by Congress.
Mr Hoffman, today inspecting the Oxford mills of the Southern Mills Corporation, is a well known Anniston booster whose genius designed the city's official seal. He has long taken an active interest in the welfare of Anniston.
A blue jay nests in a tree near 2ast and Noble streets and almost steals a letter from Dave Young's mailbox. The postman drops a note there yesterday and the bird grabs it but drops it when frightened. Tom Lee's daughter later recovers the letter and returns it to the owner.
Saturday at four oclock in the afternoon at the Alabama Hotel the first meeting is set by Mrs E L Tyler to organize a large barbecue for the county ex slaves. Mrs Tyler will lead the movement with hope of broad cooperation from patriotic societies and local business leaders in Anniston.
Huntsville April 6. Arthur Whitworth’s two and a half year old daughter was killed yesterday in Madison when a horse pawed her to death as she played in the barn yard. The family heard her screams as she wandered into danger.
George F. Hoffman and M. G. Price of Philadelphia A H Lowe of Fitchburg Mass and D C Finney of Huntville a quartet of Cotton manufacturers visiting the Southern Textile Association meeting in Atlanta inspect the Southern Mills Corporation plant at Oxford. Hoffman praises Anniston climate and Price is linked to Merrimac mills at Huntsville.
Reports from El Paso say five hundred Carrancistas arrived at Juarez with eight cars of soldiers from the Villa campaign. Rail lines remain unsettled and the United States contemplates withdrawal as Villa reportedly gains on his pursuers with relay horse speeds.
A grand jury in Birmingham returns a true bill against William Edward Clark for embezzling $1000 from the Tutwiler Operating Company at the Tutwiler hotel. The indictment centers on Clark’s alleged handling of a package left with him by Dr. Leon H. Watkins for safekeeping.
Department of justice agents report positive information that Diaz is in Mexico near Guatemala with a large force and ample munitions. He is said to be receiving rifles and other arms from his agents for transfer to the United States.
Percy L Meadow a clerk at Birmingham Trust and Savings Bank was indicted by a grand jury, charged with embezzling about 1500 dollars. He was arrested, released on 2000 dollar bond. Relatives expect settlement out of court.
A clerk and an employee allegedly stole funds and fled. After extensive travel they located the boy in Syracuse New York where he was arrested and returned to Birmingham.
