Governor Hammill outlines eleven reasons to approve a state bond issue for highway improvements. He argues the plan accelerates completion by ten years, avoids new property taxes, relies on a statewide framework, and supplements county bonds already in use.
Frank R. Wilbourn a longtime Anita resident died Tuesday afternoon at his son Rollie Wilbourn’s home after a three weeks illness from a second stroke. He was born July 9 1855 in Mt Pleasant Iowa and was 69 years 10 months and 22 days old. Funeral services set for 2 PM Thursday at the M E church with Evergreen cemetery interment. An obituary will appear next week.
Fire Chief, Marsh Millhollin, Mick Forshay and Joe Vetter from two local fire insurance firms, and a State Fire Marshal's representative toured Anita's business and residential areas on Tuesday. They identified hazards and issued orders to reduce fire risk under applicable laws and regulations. Taking precautions early can prevent disastrous fires and property loss.
The Senior Class Play In Cherry Time will be staged at the Rialto Theatre on May 10 and 11. Tickets will be reserved at Rangers' Drug Store beginning Saturday, May 5.
Henry W. Chehock long served Anita public schools and returned for a day last week to reconnect with former students and staff. Now a field representative for the American National Red Cross, he and wife Mrs. Chehock live at 782 East Bowery Street in Iowa City. Their eldest son, once a boy in Anita, is a school coach in Audubon.
Rev Don A Allen eighty four, former Anita church pastor, spoke at memorial services in Fresno honoring I O O F members. Graves at Mountain View Cemetery were decorated with flags and roses as he recalled the departed as not dead but living.
The Anita track and field meet is set for Friday afternoon May 4 starting 3 00 PM on the new City Park track. Junior and Senior High groups will compete with individual and high point honors in events including sprints distance relays and field events. No admission charged and the public is invited.
The editor received a pleasant call Monday from T. F. DeMent whose improved health followed a course of special treatment. He plans to leave in early fall with his wife for California for the winter months. Mrs. Cynthia Koob Hansen of Atlantic visited Anita this week.
H. Clay Lewis is elected City Marshal and Street Commissioner, with Fred Dennison Nicht as watchman, by the new city administration and they have started their duties. Archie Worm and wife occupy the R. D. Vernon dwelling during the Vernons absence while they visit Ardmore Oklahoma with Ted Vernon and wife.
Miss Muriel Butler of the Anita public school corps of teachers and Mr. Lawrence Reed, son of Mr. and Mrs. Wm S Reed, announced their approaching marriage at a Bridge party hosted by Misses Lesetta Hereth and Muriel Butler. The decor featured orchid and pink with candlelight and corsages tied to wedding rings housing the date July 22 1928. Guests included Misses Alice Shimer Addie Martin Gladys Pray Irma Lewis Mildred Wilson Crissie Hollen Ethel Denny Ethel Kirk Gladys McVey Margaret Myers Harriet Vierk Lucille Lamborn and Mrs R W Forshay Mrs E S Holton Mrs H C Faulkner plus out of town guests Miss Iva Fae Butler and Mrs W H Reed.
The Senior class play cast under Mrs. E. S. Holton features the production In Cherry Time. It aims to surpass past standards and entertain the public. Performances are Thursday and Friday May 10 and 11 at the Rialto Theatre with reserved seats on sale May 5 at Bongers Bros. drug store.
Mrs Duff hosted the Original Sunshine Club at her east Anita residence with many members attending a 1 PM luncheon. The afternoon featured quilting and the next meeting is set for Thursday May 10 at Mrs Root's home in South Anita. C G Hayter and family visited Elk Horn over the weekend.
A publication of broad interest to readers of the Rock Island Railway System is Rock Island Magazine issued monthly from Chicago. It is edited managed and controlled by W E Babb with news items covering the entire system.
Chas F Karns and his son from Solon plan an auto trip to Denver Colorado this week. Their daughter Mrs June Reynolds and her husband have recently moved to that city. M Dorn of this city sold 1500 bushels of corn from a farm in Adair county at one dollar per bushel.
Mrs Sherm F Myers and her daughter Bessie Myers Lowell entertained the members of the W P G Club Friday at a one o'clock dinner. The afternoon was spent in a general exchange of views on social political and other topics not of interest to men.
A high scoring eleven inning game at the Guy Smith farm saw the Crooked Creek Sluggers defeat the Highland Wild Cats 22 to 21. Spectators from both sides cheered as the Sluggers surged late to clinch the win amid loyal fan support.
Jud Seoville of Des Moines, a deputy sheriff of Polk County, visited the city Saturday while escorting a patient to Clarinda hospital for the insane.
The Anita Literary Club urges all community groups in Anita to observe National Music Week May 6 to 12 with American music programs. Topics include Stories of American Song Hymns by Americans and American music Americans Should Know. The group seeks wider local promotion of music.
Mrs. Pearl Salisbury Clovis of Atlantic is the Republican candidate for County Auditor with no opposition in the June primary. She visited Anita and vicinity to meet voters and plans a countywide canvass after the primary, aiming for the November election and broad support.
Mrs Alpha Nelson served as a delegate from the Anita Congregational church Sunday School to the state convention held in Council Bluffs last week.
Mrs. Blanche Martin and her son Eugene of Atlantic spent Sunday in Anita at the home of her parents and grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Carey.

Mayor Monnig opened court this morning to hear a violator of the prohibitory law. The offender was fined ten dollars and costs, which were paid. It is understood that a second offense will carry a one hundred dollar fine plus costs, or thirty days of city service.
Robert C Leek salesman aged 77 longtime Audubon president died Sunday afternoon at his niece Mrs Clarence Crane Omaha home after a weeklong illness. Daughter Mrs Arthur McNutt resides in Audubon and other relatives survive.
Troop 116 of Anita hosts a Friday May 11 track meet at the city park after business hours. Four groups offer events including running jumps, dashes, potato race, pull up, shot put, rope climb, and base ball throw with free admission and prizes donated by local business men displayed in the Anita General Service Company window.
A Mothers and daughters banquet is planned at the Congregational church on Thursday May 3 at 6 pm. Mrs Guy Hayter chairs the refreshment committee and Mrs H E Campbell will oversee the toast program and music. Pastor Miss Leora Miars will speak on A Tribute to Womanhood. Tickets cost 35 cents.
J Fuller Gloom argues in the Kansas City Star that farmers and town folk misunderstand each other. He suggests farmers seek business in poultry, Belgian hares, or ginseng while urban residents chase quick money and domestic routines, often ending in bankruptcy.
Grant township residents outside Anita will vote Saturday May 5 at Farmers Coop on a tax to fund a district seven school house costing up to 2500 dollars and on issuing bonds up to 10000 dollars for new buildings in districts one two four and nine polls open 5 to 10 PM
