Lawrence Hoefmeister received a telegram Saturday evening with the sad news of the death of his sister Miss Elsie Hoefmeister at her parents home in Michigan. The young lady was about 2 years old and was well known in Anita. She had suffered poor health for several months.
Prof James Carey of this city has been re elected Superintendent of the Maine school. His past year of good work and prospects for further educational advancement earned him a substantial salary increase voted unanimously by the Board of Education at their last meeting.
The Menlo Journal reports a contest prize for completing a four line verse. Rev Stah supplied the final two lines to finish The turkey trot has run its race The tango leg is out of place. The editor awarded a year’s subscription and then took vacation.
Rev. Chas C. Smith urges the congregation to consider the consequences of choosing between right and wrong. The sermon draws on real life cases of two pairs of boys and men from the same community to illustrate how careless choices lead to disastrous outcomes and highlight parental responsibility in guiding youth.
News-Telegraph reports W Bruce, vice president of Neal Institutes Co, returned from studies in Detroit Toronto Montreal and Perth Ontario then visiting Albany New York City and Cleveland while his father Senator Bruce pursues temperance advocacy. He spoke to clubs about medical treatment for alcoholism and cites openings with civic and church groups. In Des Moines Lew H Soper and Hester McCue married March 31 1914 and returned to a Diagonal Iowa home on the Super farm amid congratulations.
Mrs Edith Henry was granted a divorce from Judson D Henry by Judge J B Rockafellow yesterday on grounds of cruel and inhuman treatment. She was awarded the care custody and control of their three minor children Bessie Phyllis and Lyle.
Lew H. Soper purchased two teams of horses for his Diagonal Iowa farm last Saturday and shipped them Monday with farm implements and household goods. One team consisted of four year old mares bought from Fred Pieper for 425 dollars and the other from Alex Harris for 287 dollars. As a newly married man he is acquiring the best stock available.
Harry Woodmansee has re enlisted in the U S Navy and left Des Moines last week to enter upon his duties. He will be assigned to the battleship Texas. He served two years in the Spanish American War and now completes eight years in the Navy. His re enlistment for another four years was naturally expected.
Chas. M. Felt came back from Tulsa where he spent the winter with his son Dr. Roland A. Felt. He will stay in Iowa for a few weeks and may tour Washington in early summer to visit his sister Mrs. Walter S. Sherman. He met Anita and Cass county friends in Oklahoma including Mrs. C. W. Major and Miss Anderson at Enid as well as Bob Cline. On the way home he visited Milo and met Gus Earl and Tom Woods. He stopped at Menlo to visit his son Roy Felt and wife.
Anita city officials were sworn in for a two year term. Mayor-elect George Scholl and council members J L Carey Warren Kellaway Homer Kirkham E W Holmes and S V Jenkins hold positions plus J C Jenkins becomes City Clerk. Committees were named and council meetings held nightly as they review the books of City Assessor Godfrey Miller.
State Treasurer W. C. Brown will remit about 347.68 to each of Iowa's 1643 townships within a week. The automob ile license funds for the six months ending April 1 provide a record total after deductions to the highway commission and the department expenses.
Henry D. Holaday of Massena township announces his candidacy for the Republican nomination for County Treasurer at the June primary. He aims to win without opposition, with incumbent Charles E. Malone seeking re election for the Democrats. The Massena Echo endorses Holaday as a qualified, trusted home candidate who will mobilize support across the county.
Hannah F Voorhees mother of David T Voorhees John C Voorhees and Peter E F Voorhees died in Des Moines on April seventh 1914 after months of illness first came from New Jersey in December to Anita Wisconsin area and will be taken to White House Station New Jersey for burial services in Des Moines brief services were held today with relatives moving toward Chicago for return to New Jersey interment beside husband Peter Voorhees Sr she was 75 years 2 months and 5 days old.
R. C. Rasmussen formerly of Anita now with the Royal Male Quartette visited the city Saturday. He reports his new work as most pleasant after vaudeville and now chautauqua and lyceum engagements. Rasmussen has signed to play with a big band for two months during the coming chautauqua season and has plans for months ahead. His wife has lived at Anita while he travels. He is a genial musician with many friends in the old home county.
