New Cent Sparks Crowds and Police at Philadelphia Mint
The Philadelphia North American reports the new cent draws crowds, with exchanges offered from a quarter to fifty dollars as citizens vie to obtain the 1837 issue. Police were needed to enforce first come, first served, and the Mint may suspend further issues to boost supply. Newsboys sold three for sixpence as demand stayed high.
