An accident at the Midlothian coal pits caused a sudden influx of water, engulfing workers below. The disaster damaged the engine boiler and halted rescue efforts as the community mourned missing laborers, with both white and colored men affected.
A December 18 1856 severe gale battered Burrato with hail snow and rain. The Canada dock Wilkes and Co. warehouse were destroyed while Jubsons and City Elevator unroofed. The District School House spire and southwest section blown off. Rail embankment washed away and communications disrupted. No vessels afloat on the lake and damage remains unestimated.
