Public notice announces a county meeting at Belvidere Western Lodge on Monday December 7 1863 at 2 30 o clock to consider support for a local draft quota of five hundred to eight hundred thousand volunteers. Citizens urged to attend with the supervisory attendance deemed desirable.
The Belvidere county board considers issuing bonds to pay a $300 bounty per volunteer, hoping to attract enlistees and prevent a state draft. Officials warn against reliance on drafts and urge immediate meeting at the Western Hotel to discuss protective measures and county adoption of the plan.
The Albany Journal prints dramatic dispatches from Chattanooga praising a Union victory over Confederate forces at Chickamauga. It claims 4 000 to 10 000 prisoners captured and extensive artillery losses, with East Tennessee and Cumberland Valley positions secured against Rebel forces.
The new National Cemetery at Gettysburg, adjoining the old plot near Prospect Hill, covers about 61 acres.
