First Andrews Football Team Faces Season With New Coach

Virgil Reed, Andrews druggist, returned from a tonsillectomy in San Angelo and is recovering at home. For the first time in Andrews Schools a fulltime football coach and ample uniforms are available as Coach Bobby Anthony directs 22 boys at practice. The squad includes players such as James Roberts, Bunkley Sansom, Jerry Price, Robert Dillard, Warner McKinney, Dalton Echols, Jack Fitzgerald, Joe Dillard, and Gene Erwin as manager, with no declared first string.

First Bale Gins in Andrews Gaines County History

W. T. Anderson living five miles east of Andrews produced the first bale of cotton grown in Andrews or Gaines County. The 465 pound bale was carried to Seagraves for ginning on Tuesday, and Anderson also took off the second bale weighing 175 pounds later this week.

Largest Meteor Crater Excavation Begins Near Odessa

In Odessa Texas excavation of a major meteor crater eight miles southwest of the city proceeds with 20 workers under University of Texas and WPA supervision. The 600 foot rim to rim site near Ector County may exceed only Canyon Diablo in Arizona in size. Dr. FE H Sellards notes the crater formed by an iron meteorite thousands of years ago and hopes the dig reveals effects on earth from large impacts.

State road designation hopes fade for Eunice-Andrews route

With little encouragement from the State Highway Commission, Andrews officials returned from Austin hopeful for possible designation of the Eunice to Andrews highway but the commission showed little optimism until Big Spring to Lenorah right of way is secured. County attorney Pat Beene, leading a county delegation, collected $180 in back taxes during the Austin visit.

Opening of Andrews Public School Draws Record 327 Enrollees

Crowds packed the Andrews auditorium for the first week at the Andrews Public School as enrollment reached 327. The district reports 245 in grades and 82 in high school with 35 in English and one class of Spanish II.

Wildlife friendly ponds in Lamesa Texans CCC report

George D. Keathley of the Lamesa CCC Camp notes that well planned farm ponds support wildlife in the sparsely watered Southern Great Plains. Ponds linked to soil and water conservation attract mallards blue winged teal and other waterfowl and require fencing to protect water plants from livestock. Ponds should be 1 to 2 miles apart to prevent overgrazing at water sites.

Missionary Marie Embree to Study at Wayland College

Miss Marie Embree of the Marie Embree Baptist Church will depart early Monday for Plainview Texas to enroll at Wayland College. The Lamesa Baptist Association backs her study plan leading toward Baptist Seminary training in Fort Worth and a future mission post abroad. A fund drive remains open at Evans Store to support her seven year program and related expenses.

Udden Recovers German Potash Monopoly Credit

Dr J A Udden former head of the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas is credited with breaking a German monopoly on potash. He discovered potash bearing minerals in Texas in 1912 and later led research to develop an economical extraction method.
