Mrs. Bob Sherrard the former Miss Elnora Price received a bridal shower at Mrs. G. A. Brasfield home Friday Septist with Mrs Brasfield and Mrs Bill Betenbough as hostesses. Gifts, sand tarts, cookies, brick ice cream and punch were shared with numerous local guests and out of town attendees.

Virgil Reed, Andrews druggist, returned from a tonsillectomy in San Angelo and is recovering at home. For the first time in Andrews Schools a fulltime football coach and ample uniforms are available as Coach Bobby Anthony directs 22 boys at practice. The squad includes players such as James Roberts, Bunkley Sansom, Jerry Price, Robert Dillard, Warner McKinney, Dalton Echols, Jack Fitzgerald, Joe Dillard, and Gene Erwin as manager, with no declared first string.
W. T. Anderson living five miles east of Andrews produced the first bale of cotton grown in Andrews or Gaines County. The 465 pound bale was carried to Seagraves for ginning on Tuesday, and Anderson also took off the second bale weighing 175 pounds later this week.
Andrews schools add modern play options with two table tennis sets and badminton in the high school gym alongside football, tennis, basketball and volleyball. The move follows a trend that every child should have a game to play.
Foundation work for Andrews County's new courthouse is underway with pouring this week. Excavation nears completion as sand and gravel piles grow. Several local workers who aided the drive with “Irish buggies” reportedly quit or were dismissed after a hot day and rough conditions.
A University of Texas student engineer claims to have devised a carburetorless car mechanism called a mechanical injector that he believes will outlast and outperform standard carburetors. Mrs W O Ingram visited Odessa Tuesday.
Congressman George Mahon in Lubbock advocates legislation to strip profits from war if the United States enters conflict. He notes wartime profits during World War I and urges quick passage, while pledging to help keep America out of the European war and to serve his West Texas district.
A large turnout from Andrews attended the Midland Rodeo this past weekend with many staying through nearly all events. The biggest crowd came on Labor Day and Mrs. Fred Gray represented Andrews in the Cow Girls contest.
In Odessa Texas excavation of a major meteor crater eight miles southwest of the city proceeds with 20 workers under University of Texas and WPA supervision. The 600 foot rim to rim site near Ector County may exceed only Canyon Diablo in Arizona in size. Dr. FE H Sellards notes the crater formed by an iron meteorite thousands of years ago and hopes the dig reveals effects on earth from large impacts.
With little encouragement from the State Highway Commission, Andrews officials returned from Austin hopeful for possible designation of the Eunice to Andrews highway but the commission showed little optimism until Big Spring to Lenorah right of way is secured. County attorney Pat Beene, leading a county delegation, collected $180 in back taxes during the Austin visit.
Crowds packed the Andrews auditorium for the first week at the Andrews Public School as enrollment reached 327. The district reports 245 in grades and 82 in high school with 35 in English and one class of Spanish II.
The Andrews Parent Teacher Association invites all patrons to attend Open House Friday night at 8 p m to meet new teachers and kick off a successful school year. The next regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday September 21 at 3 1 p m.
George D. Keathley of the Lamesa CCC Camp notes that well planned farm ponds support wildlife in the sparsely watered Southern Great Plains. Ponds linked to soil and water conservation attract mallards blue winged teal and other waterfowl and require fencing to protect water plants from livestock. Ponds should be 1 to 2 miles apart to prevent overgrazing at water sites.
Mrs. Buddy Armstrong arrived back home this week following a trip to Fort Worth.
Andrews High School Band under leader Bill King orders 42 new uniforms six basses and soon four or five snare drums. Tuesday meeting elected Joe Dillard president Kenneth Thompson vice president and James Roberts reporter. The band aims for fast peppy performances this year.
Miss Marie Embree of the Marie Embree Baptist Church will depart early Monday for Plainview Texas to enroll at Wayland College. The Lamesa Baptist Association backs her study plan leading toward Baptist Seminary training in Fort Worth and a future mission post abroad. A fund drive remains open at Evans Store to support her seven year program and related expenses.
Dr J A Udden former head of the Bureau of Economic Geology at The University of Texas is credited with breaking a German monopoly on potash. He discovered potash bearing minerals in Texas in 1912 and later led research to develop an economical extraction method.
