Miss Charlene Goodall is treated at Andrews Hospital for tonsillitis. Mrs J J Eastman and family visit in Houston this week. Harold Roberts and Ross Leird travel to Douglas Wyoming on business. Mrs Clayton Barrick and son Charles visit sister C W Roberts family over weekend. Mr and Mrs Chas W Roberts.
Floyd and Graham earned honors at the state meet in Austin. Floyd took second in high hurdles, behind Brady's Richard Hampton. Graham finished third in discus with 138 feet 2 and one half inches. Jack Smith qualified for finals but did not place.
Mrs. J. E. Shumaker of El Paso visited the News office and offered observations on Andrews. She recalled 1910 as her last visit when the Dunn Hotel and the old courthouse stood with little else amid the sand.
Andrews high school seniors stage The Male Animal tonight at 8 in the high school auditorium. The comedy by Thurber and Nuzent features an all senior cast except for sophomore Jack Burton with Weldon Gregston Bobby Joe Barnes Charlene Goodall Juanita Hudson and Sonny Stephenson in the cast.
Murray J. Howze announces his candidacy for District Attorney of the 109th Judicial District in Texas. The district includes Andrews, Crane, Loving, Reeves, Ward and Winkler counties. Howze, a West Texan native, has lived in Monahans for 12 years.
Boy scouts in Andrews and Fullerton will hold a court of honor at the American Legion hall at 8 p m Tuesday. American Legion troop 56 the Lions club troop 156 and the Fullerton 666 troop will all be in attendance. Scoutmaster R S Dillard announced.
Snippet notes Sr. attended the South Plains Press Association convention in Lubbock last Friday and Saturday. Mr. and Mrs. H. M. Nixon with their children visited the Nixon parents in Brownwood over the weekend. Ferrel Nixon, a Baylor student, joined them. Mrs. Margeret Price visited her brother Delma Lee West and family in Snyder during the past week.
Fifteen dogs competed at the first Andrews Girl Scout dog show held Sunday at Hamilton field. Mrs. Marie Roberts bulldog Sandy won grand champion, with Penny the hound taking runner up. Proceeds funded the Girl Scout camping trip this summer.
Andrews High School workshop and Junior High addition bids totaled 149233 dollars. Givens Construction Co of Lubbock held the low general contract bid of 130000 dollars and 12500 for plumbing and heating. Electrical bids dominated by City Electric Odessa and Southwest Electric. award to Givens with seven months for shop and five months for addition.
About 1000 spectators and 45 contestants from across West Texas attended the first Andrews Western Round-Up high school rodeo. Monahans won team honors with 20 points, Jal placed second with 15, and Billy Bynum of Sterling City led individuals with 9.12 points. Anne Smith of Jal was high point cowgirl with 13 points. Bill Teague and Mildred Cotton earned runner-up individual honors.
A public open house will be held Sunday May 21 at the South Fullerton gasoline plant 17 miles northwest of Andrews on Ranch Road 87 from 2 to 6 PM. Staff will guide tours explaining the plant operations. light refreshments afterward. The facility processes casing head gas to recover propane butane natural gasoline and render the rest suitable as fuel. The plant is operated by Stanolind Oil and Gas for a group of owners including several oil companies and individuals such as Elizabeth F Frankel and Harding Frankel.
Five teams Stanolind Oilers Phillies Stanolind Gassers and Fire Department will play a 30 game summer schedule. Games on Monday Wednesday Friday at 8 PM with a 5 minute grace period before forfeiting. Schedule lists dates from May 22 to July 28 with pairings for each matchup.
The Methodist church hosted an Open House with its Annual Silver Tea last Sunday from 4 to 6 pm. Under Mrs. Pat McNair leadership local musical artists performed with piano, organ, voice, and instrumental selections featuring a high school chorus directed by Miss Dorothy Post and a large volunteer hospitality team.
Stewart and several other women names are listed among attendees. Charles Goodall returned from Purcell Oklahoma after visiting his gravely ill mother.
Scattered rain and hail reported across Andrews county with the heaviest soaking in Dollarhide at 2 1 2 inches. Fullerton saw 1 1 2 inches and hail covering ground 3 to 6 inches. Town and surrounding areas measured about 1 inch with heavier rains southeast of Andrews. Seminole suffered roof and window damage from a heavy afternoon storm.
Andrews county sets a 2000 dollar quota for Series E savings bonds as part of the Independence Drive. The drive runs May 15 through July 4 with a state total of 24,088,000. President Truman and Treasury officials will launch the drive May 15 in Philadelphia, followed by a Texas kickoff in Fort Worth.
Former Brown County residents plan their annual reunion and picnic on May 21 at McKenzie Park in Lubbock. Festivities begin about 10:30 with the northeast park area designated as the site. G. W. Sewell of Tahoka, president, expects record attendance.
Mr and Mrs D L West and their children from Snyder visited Mrs Ernest Hensley and her husband on Thursday.
Roy Carter district governor elect of 2-T-2 visited the Andrews Lions at a Tuesday luncheon and pledged to aid the club and district. He named Lion Bill Blair zone chairman. Robert Forbes will represent Lions at Boys State. Bill Roach selected American Legion rep. Golf Club and Rodeo committee discussed arena site changes approved by the commissioners court and CAA approval.
Andrews high school seniors were hosted by the Baptist church WMU circles for a banquet. Dr. George Stokes of Wayland College spoke on Gold in Them Thar Hills. Rev. Gerald Johnson gave the invocation, Dr. Z. W. Hutchinson Jr welcomed guests, Bob Barnes delivered the response, and Betty Kelton sang.
Mrs J A Ulmer of San Antonio is visiting in the home of her sons Jimmie and Craddock this week creating a family weekend gathering with relatives and friends.
Mrs. Jackie Jackson spent the weekend with her mother Mrs. G H Kirkland in Brownfield, sharing family time and catching up with relatives.
