Andrews County communities push for a new library and community building sites while planning a theater and park. Home Demonstration Clubs fund a library book drive, and tax values for 1948 raise bond payment estimates. Local news notes include Lions Club, church park talks, Red Cross drive lag, and new business developments near the bank and tin structure replacement.
Evangelist Preston Cotham of Lawton Oklahoma will conduct a Church of Christ meeting in Andrews from April 14 to 25. Cotham is a nationally known evangelist writer and radio lecturer. Pastor Martin L Kamistra announced Tuesday that Andrews secured him for a return engagement.
Dudley K. Brummett of Lubbock announced his candidacy for the Texas State Senate from the 30th district. A 28-year-old war veteran, he served as an Air Corps lieutenant and B-17 pilot, was shot down and held as a POW, and later earned the Air Medal while building a varied legal and public service career in Lubbock and at Texas Tech.
The 15 county Scout Ranch drive totals 162 559 with Odessa leading at 39 475 including a 2 294 last night. Big Spring is second at 26 891 followed by Pecos 16 289 Monahans 14 532 Kermit 13 210 Midland 23 399 Andrews 3 173 Colorado City 7 006 Sweetwater 12 536 Snyder 5 265 Rotan 2 156 and area towns 396. The drive ends but cleanup boosts outstandings before a 200 000 goal to fund Davis Mountains site facilities.
Miss Joyce Cotten daughter of Mr and Mrs L W Cotten married Lynn Mitchell son of Mr and Mrs C C Mitchell in a 730 pm Wednesday home ceremony officiated by Judge Milton Ramsey. Attendants were Jimmie Clack and Miss Geneve Hitch. The bride a Andrews High School graduate Salutatorian wore a blue gabardine dress. Groom works for Humble Oil. After a wedding trip to Lubbock the couple will reside in Andrews.
John Urbin Underwood, 66, died Tuesday night in Andrews Hospital. Funeral services will be held Friday afternoon in Rising Star. He lived alone in Andrews, born in Parker County in 1881, and had lived there six months. Ruth Allen, a daughter, survived.
Mrs. B. F. Seay reports in Andrews County that only about 600 of 1359 dollars is raised for the Red Cross drive through two days. Many veterans and families decline giving due to wartime incidents, though funds stay locally for relief. Donors are urged to give and leave contributions at Bennetts or Corner Drug. the county would lack funds if a disaster occurs.
Harold Roberts and Weldon Ingram have bought a seismograph drilling unit and water truck. They secured a contract with an Oklahoma exploration company and are currently working in Elk City Oklahoma.
Mr. and Mrs. George B. Eaton of Fort Stockton visited their daughter Mrs. Anna Bell Dittman and Mrs. Ollie Garvin this week, sharing family time and travel.
Rev Hubert Christian pastor of First Baptist Crane will preach when a Spring Revival starts Friday March 19 at the Baptist Church. Two daily services at 10:00 am and 7:30 pm with Rev Jay Dannelley leading the singing. Rev Eugene Brand announced the revival and noted Christians in the Andrews area will welcome the event.
Andrews welcomes Java Junction the newest cafe owned by Mrs. Sallie McLaughlin and Tou Hancock. The ranch theme decor includes a cook shack dug well oaken bucket pulley and rope horse shoe adorned gate cactus and bucking throne. The cafe aims to serve wholesome food with western hospitality and invites patrons to visit.
Adams Grocery and Market marks its first anniversary as a business in Andrews with a full page News ad. Mr and Mrs Adams bought a home in New Woolam addition and plan to remain locals, running a modern store and engaging in religious and civic affairs.
The Andrews Volunteer Fire Department needed rain slickers after a Wednesday call to the F. T. McCollum Farm to extinguish a rent house blaze. A local businessman donated $10 and the Andrews County News pledged $10 toward purchasing twelve to fifteen slickers for the volunteers.
The W A Bill Farmer Construction Co made a business trip to Hamilton Texas where it purchased a Bucyrus shovel and a K 10 International truck. The gear will be used in Andrews County and the Permian Basin to speed up construction work and improve efficiency.
The American Petroleum Institute outlines a 4 billion expansion for 1947-48, including 35 000 wells drilled this year and refinery capacity of 450 000 barrels per day. It also notes pipeline and marketing growth, plus exploration among 5 000 wells aimed at expanding reserves and ensuring long term supply.
Forrest Smith a pharmacist and owner of Smith Drug attended a regional pharmacists meeting in Midland last week. Speakers included Dr Henry Burlage UT College of Pharmacy John McCartney Parke Davis Plasco Moore DE and Dr A H Chute with 15 years in merchandising and teaching retailing. The event focused on updating pharmacists and druggists on pharmaceutical practice and merchandising ideas.
A late winter norther swept down from the north and east on Wednesday and Thursday driving temperatures to record lows. The Texas Electric Power plant thermometer registered 8 above and 10 above at 9 o clock Thursday. Snow fell in Waco and San Antonio as pipes froze, with widespread damage expected but no serious injuries reported.
A car driven by L A Russell failed to stop at the curb smashing the plate glass window of the Citys Drug. The brakes on the Ford allegedly failed. The building damage was covered but the car's damage is not yet known.
Mr and Mrs Billy Sharp and Bobby Jr of Ft Worth with W J Sharp of Waco visit Mr and Mrs Pill Sharp the new owners of the Andrews Hotel. Mr and Mrs F L Conyers were in Seminole Monday on business.
Earnest Jones and Richard Casey returned Sunday from a weekend trip to Austin. They visited local sights and reported good weather and enjoyable activities during their short journey.
A baby girl Velanie Jeanne was born to Mr. and Mrs. A. A Harrell on March 5 weighing 8 pounds. A daughter Katherine Yvonne was born to Mr. and Mrs. Z. C. Long on March 7. Rebecca Lea arrived for Mr. and Mrs. P. W. Fowler on March 6 weighing 6 pounds 4 ounces.
Andrews County Commissioners Court met with oil company reps and tax officials to discuss the 1949 budget and taxable value set at 32.5 million dollars an increase of 7.15 million over 1947. Officials questioned a 60 thousand dollar miscellaneous item and clarified road fund needs and bond usage as park staff costs and other line items drew scrutiny.
Reports from Andrews County detail three new wildcat drilling ventures. Dan Auld plans the No 1 Mrs M M Raymond near Shafter Lake to test the Devonian, at depths around 9 600 to 10 000 feet. Atlantic Refining holds the lease. Continental Oil No 1 C 25 University aims about 4 800 feet in North Central Andrews near Shafter Lake. Texaco plans 5 100 foot well near Mabee field to test San Andres Permian.
Winston Hull of Midland was named to the American Cancer Society Texas Division board of directors for 1948. He will oversee activities in District Z and counties including Andrews, Borden, Dickens, Dawson, Fisher, Gaines, Garza, Howard, Glasscock, Kent, King, Lynn, Martin, Midland, Mitchell, Nolan, Scurry, Stonewall, Terry, and Yoakum, and will serve as chairman for the area.
A test in the Shafter Lake area reported 24 hour potential of 1 047 barrels of 38 gravity oil with a gas to oil ratio of 876 1 through a one half inch choke. The pay interval was 9 50 to 4 900 feet and the well is on production.
Local teachers attend the West Texas Teachers Association annual convention in Lubbock on March 12. Dr. A J Stoddard and Willard Goslin headline as sessions and committees run through the day at Lubbock High School with music from the Odessa Senior High Band.
