The First National Bank board voted to pay a five percent semi annual dividend to stockholders of record June 30, 1957. It also raised certified surplus from 150000 to 155000 from net earnings, bringing total capital and surplus to 355000 per vice president Bob Barnes.
Homeowners in northwest Andrews circulated petitions calling on the city council to repeal Ordinance No. 97 of 1953 permitting oil and gas drilling within city limits. The petitions, bearing 53 signatures, arrive after a council hearing and ahead of Texas Company drilling preparations.
J W McKinney of Corsicana has been selected to succeed Ted Phillips as pastor here. He will move July 2 and has 42 years in ministry with a track record of growth, youth work, and community programs in Corsicana Perryton and Winfield Kansas.
Piggly Wiggly leads Little League after the first half with a 7-2 record, followed by Corner Drug at 6-3 and Lindsey Roustabouts at 3-6 while the Bankers sit 2-7. Mike Compton and Billy Burke pace home run hitters with five apiece, and Emery Smith delivers a 5-0 win over Roustabouts in one shutout.
A Dollarhide resident died in a two car collision at FM 866 and Highway 302, with his wife injured and nephew hurt. Harold Cooley was killed, Lenora Cooley suffered fractures, George Duddington injured, while funeral services were pending. Another crash near Tulane killed R. T. Cleveland and Roy Lee Barber, with 11 others in the vehicle. An Andrews area crash near Lubbock involved Blondie B. Bell and several passengers all reported injured.
City and school officials refine a contract for transferring the water system noting four clarifications and a golf course reuse provision. Ownership would remain with the school until bond funds allow city acquisition, enabling an election on revenue bonds.
At the first meeting on the lighted courts, 25 people attended. Bob Barnes was elected president, Randy Pendleton vice president, Mrs. Gertrude Averyt secretary treasurer, and Roy Smith and Kelton Brewer directors. Directors and officers will meet to draft by laws. The adult tennis club grew from a Youth Center program and may become a year round activity.

A 14 year old was sentenced to two years in Bowd Reformitory Gatesville for assaulting a nine year old girl in an alley behind the Rose theatre. He was taken to Gatesville by Judge Virgil Lasater and Sheriff Ray Phillip. The judge and sheriff attended a juvenile clinic there June 15.
The western edge of a cool front sparked storms across much of the South Plains Monday night producing heavy rain in parts of the county. Pete Millican said the city reported 0.9 inches with higher estimates of 6 to 12 inches elsewhere. the heaviest rain fell northwest of town. No hail or damage occurred despite lightning and thunder.
A youth center summer recreation trip to Balmor is planned for Saturday. A bus leaves the Youth Center at 8 30 a m to return about 9 p m. The trip is for junior and senior high youths with written parental permission. Costs cover two meals and swimming plus optional entertainment.
